Frame identification

Rob J.

Need some help on frames. Would like to know starting 1960 excluding the Suburbans what frames were used up to the mid 70’s. Were  there multiple different frames used? I here about short frames and long frames so were there only 2? And what were the lengths of these frames used. Thanks, gitty up and cheers!

Don't forget about your B80. 1974 and 1975 only those were referred to as a mid-length frame. They weren't short or long.

I'd be curious to see what the answers here are myself.

Particularly around 1963 to 1965. And what frame did the 1045 model use?

1045 was short frame. Long frames started in 66 I think with the 1276

That's what I was thinking as well.

Do you know if there were differences other than length, between the frames of maybe 62 or 63 versus the mid-60s?

Those '69 to '72s that used the Eaton 5 and 6 had strange frames.

Is the 953 a short frame?

The 701, 502,552, and the 702 share the same frame. 1963 started the cambered front axle that mounts and attaches differently.

953 uses a bigger front axle pivot pin so the front plate is beefier. 953 WB is approx 48" same as long frames. Short frame WB is approx 42"

I haven't measured mine but I thought it was a long frame.     But the snow plow that came with it has the short frame "A" shaped frame. :confusion-confused:

Just measured my 953 at 48" wheel base.

I think the 953 plow (and 1054) were designed like the short frame plows but longer with an axle bracket to match. I run a std. long frame plow on mine with a std. rear axle bracket.

The axle bracket does have the pin notch in front of the axle rather than below the axle.   This style bracket will push the frame forward 3-4".

In addition to different lengths there were  a few variations on how the hood and any tachmatic were mounted

I am curious about the "front of the axle" notch brackets. I've been thinking they were for the A-frame plows on short frame tractors. Are below-axle notch brackets also usable and if so, on which plow frames? Please school me!

Most of the frames were welded channel, but I seem to remember (I want to say the 854) was a molded or stamped frame ???  :confusion-confused:

You may be right I’ve never seen one in person but was told the 854 shared the same frame as the 1045.?.?. I’d like some measurements but can’t seem to find that info.

Just check my manuals and the 8:54 frame was part number 4990 and for the 10:45 it lists the frame as part number 5422

I think the difference is because of the way the hood mounts

This is my 854. Welded angle iron and welded-in front axle plates (the bolts in the rear plate are holding a flanged bearing I added for the lower steering shaft).

This is the 1045 from similar angle. Only difference I can see after looking under and around is the welded-on pivot for the hood.

@gwest_ca & @JPWH This is the style of bracket I was wondering about. I've never seen it mounted. Do the slots face forward or backward? Or is this a tiller mount and not a plow mount?

Neither !!! That mounts with the slots facing down and the levers towards the rear (just like Dad's 702)

The 854 i have came with a plow - simiar mount, faces down, BUT has the HY-3 Hydraulic cylinder mount welded to the left side....

So a royal PITA to mount the plow having to hold it up in the slots while closing a lever. Or I guess one could attach the lift and hoist it up into the slots.

Actually, Don, not that bad. The hardest thing is getting the plow frame squared and centered under the tractor mount - once you lift the frame, you can"rock" it front to back a small amount to engage it, close the levers, and pin them. Then move to the lift mechanism...

Here's a pic of the one I took off my 953.       The flat clamp bar fits vertical on the rear  and the angle with the pin slot at the bottom mounts vertical to the front of the axle.

My 953 (48" long frame)  has a short plow frame( the true "A" shape) and the axle bracket with the notch in front of the axle.

See the above pic.        I don't see any reason this arrangement would not work on any long frame tractor except the forward swept 520s.

Showing it with the plow locked in sure makes it clearer! Thanks

So I guess it could be used with any plow that fits the tractor frame that had the cross rod mount on the plow frame (i.e. not the early "bolt on" plows)?
