JD is an amazing company and builds some great equipment for the "premium" end of the market.

WH did a superb job of engineering and marketing to a different "more affordable" segment with their products. But don't be fooled, WH was never cheap just less expensive and somewhat less "feature rich" that the contemporary JD models.

Don. I will tell ya' .... Years ago, we were at a big tractor show in Indiana and the featured garden tractor model was Gravely, so the Gravely folks got this huge tent set up and their head Gravely guy was giving a speech and just talkin' it up about all the attachments Gravely has, so much more than any other manufacturer. So, at this point my temperature is starting to rise, my blood is beginning to boil and I'm gonna' blow a gasket!  Ain't nobody gonna" tell me about all the attachments there brand has, well at this point we are telling each other "well Gravely has a welder attachment" and me saying "yes Wheel Horse has one too" so we go all the way down the list and finally the Gravely guy says "Gravely has a attachment that you can use on the roof of a building to take shingles off" .... Huh??? I could not Imageon lugging a heavy Gravely up on roof to take shingle off but then I told him "Well Wheel Horse has a cup holder and an AM radio!" I then smiled and I got out of there fast before I got my butt kicked!

@Wild Bill in VA  agree to a point , lawn / garden tractors made back in the day , shared  a number of  build up ideas and opportunities , wheel horse /  john deere  / gravley / bolens , cub cadet ,  all had the chance to build up from basically the same parts /  equipment  build up stash . it was time that made the biggest difference , wheel horse hung on as long as it could , toro obviousely was , the killing final stage , to a long era designed  yard tractor. it was almost shocking to me to watch  J/D go total plastic , pressed metal parts . loved the gravely units , truly a  work beast , similar bolens build ups . think today , refreshing a horse , is a great opportunity to integrate improvements to it  to make it live on . just my own 2 cents , along with regular  thorough maintenance , when these are gone , thats it , like a covered wagon . been enjoying my stuff  40 + years . pete

Sounds like a mighty dubious claim for that era, but I admire your fighting retreat, Bill!

I've seen recent building demolitions where a skid steer was hoisted up to knock down inner walls and jackhammer the floor underneath it!

Also, didn't someone post a picture of a GT suspended from a crane trimming the top of a really tall hedge--with an operator in the seat, no less.

I like havin' the wheels on the ground, myself.
