63 Round Hoods and gas tanks

Recommended Posts

Rob J.

I’m looking for some help with a 753 I got yesterday. I would like to know how the hood mounted. Bottom of my hood is gone and there isn’t any mounting mechanism. I may be missing something here or is this the way is was? Surely not. Also on the gas tank…..sigh sigh sigh, is this really a two piece gas tank and a gasket separating the two is what’s causing the leak? Oh what did I get myself into? Not a very well thought out idea and I’m certainly no genius.

In general if any of you have a 753 and possible spare parts and certainly your knowledge of these guys I would most appreciate it. You scratch my back I’ll scratch your back. Thanks in advance.

The gas tanks used on 1961 & 62 models were one piece.

Yes sir , I have an 854 with a two piece tank , got tired of trying to seal it, put a one piece tank on it.

Read on here some used tank sealer to seal a two piece.

The two holes in your hood by the gas tank, you can use 1/4" bolts or buy the knurled knobs for them. There should be another hole under the front of the hood for the same thing.

Rob, Here is how i fixed my hood on a 653. Bent 1/8" steel wrap around on bottom as hood was corroded and cracked beyond repair. Then brazed in place and fabbed mount that you see bolted through existing hole in front and bolted to bottom of hood with foam rubber weather strip between hood and mount. I had same problem with tank and used this as per instructions with good results. Did not want to attempt disassembly with those small screws. I have a thread on here somewhere showing how i fixed hood and tank. Nuts or threads in tank were toast on mine. I J B Welded some flange nuts in opening and reinforced back area of hood where holes go through with same method, 1/8" steel brazed to inside.

I have a repop bottom hood bracket.  Someone was making them but not sure they are on Red Square. Are you tank holes for mounting the hood good and not broken?  Also believe I have two of the one piece tanks from 61 and 62 which I would switch out that 2-piece. Will make your life a lot easier

Hope this helps

Very interested in the tank you have please. On the hood, looks like I’ll have to do something similar to what Kenneth said in post above.
