ISO: Snow Blade Index Pin and Assembly Lift Rod

Recommended Posts

Forrest Carver

Grading my driveway with a snow/dozer blade yesterday, I managed to snap an index pin (part #103498). This is the pin that locks the blade in left, center, or right position. The blade is pretty useless without it, although I'm sure there are several other ways to secure it in place.

I'm not sure this pin was supposed to be threaded, but mine is. Based on the cotter pin hole being slightly off-center, it looks to me like the original owner had snapped the original index pin and replaced it with this homemade one. I aim to do the same, unless anyone happens to have one they could sell me.

I could also use an assembly lift rod, #39 on the exploded view and original part number 103015, if anyone has it. But it's kind of an odd piece and the need is not dire.

Put an ad in the wanted section of the classifieds of what you want, or you could call AZ tractor and see if he has the parts you looking for. They're probably other options also.

That pin was made from a piece of ready rod. Ready rod is a really soft metal and I would not suggest using it again. If you make it out of a piece of cold rolled round stock of the correct diameter, it should out last the life of the plow.

Thanks. I actually wound up finding a 6" 5/8 bolt which I plan to drill a hole in for the index rods and cotter pin. It's only grade 5...hopefully that's strong enough. If not, I'll just order some grade 8 rod from Mcmaster-Carr.

It makes perfect sense that this was homemade, now. Before starting to grade, I tested the blade tilt adjustment and the blade wound up getting stuck in the rightward position because the index pin was still too long even fully retracted. It took about 2 hours and a stroke of dumb luck to get it to finally release. So perhaps the breakage was fortuitous...now I'll be able to change blade positions without dread

@Forrest Carver  that index pin is smooth , done a lot of detailing on my steering quadrants , when you set that plow up to build , after you have assembled the quadrant , build it in an elevated position so you can roller stool around it as you assemble and RED GREASE lubricate it. when you set up your lever swing rod squeeze handle , while bolted in place , use small channel lock plyers , to detail  out the sloppiness in the extra length , when lubricated ,and dialed in there is no play in the handle , the index pin , sounds like a rifle bolt , very smooth /  solid in action . lever rod to frame movable , swing points , use a bolt to initial secure , find sweet swing spot , use an elastic nut to hold that sweet spot , plow elevated from floor , 2 milk crates , lets you totally verify swing / movement function , if its set up correctly  on the crates , thats exactly how it will hang under the tractor, that how I set up my plows , swing with very smooth solid ease , lucas red aerosol grease , used at every joint , washer up  sloppy areas , works better . pete
