When I took the seat off of a project 1045 tractor here that eventually turned into @Oldskool Mike's "Hiram" it had an extra HD coil spring going from the bottom of the seat to one of the transmission bolts that holds the OE seat bracket on. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I haven't torn into this one yet so I can't say one way or the other here. Some of the older engines had a fuel pump that was driven off of the cam, some did not. I'm not at all sure which one this is or if having a primer lever has an effect on what kit can be used. The spring and square pan seat appear original or at least period correct. I can see the McLean dual spring with the rods that keep it aligned working nicely for that chassis. For the 854, I'd prefer not to have a vertical spring in the middle of the toolbox. (The 1045 that went to Trina had the rare optional piece of 4x4 PT lumber in there to hold the seat up so the tool box was pretty useless.) I am not petite so my spring is bending down a good bit. The spacer idea is promising--a piece of 3” x 1-to-2" rectangular tubing would fit the bottom of the seat and the full width of the spring and I could move the seat back a bit for my long legs since the spring and seat holes wouldn’t have to align. Moving the seat too high or too far back will have my legs hitting the underside of the steering wheel or put too much weight behind the rear axle. I’m also wondering if, in addition to the spacer, one or two or three of strips of 3” wide x 3mm thick spring steel could be “layered” onto the inside curve of the existing spring to make it stiffer--same idea as truck leaf springs. Punching holes for the bolts at each end might be a challenge but it’d be scarely noticeable blending in with the existing spring. I had two of those pumps on K-301 powered snowmobiles.. pity they didn't keep the hand primer because it made long term storage starting a breeze. It should take the standard Carter/Kohler pump diaphragm and valves, not the Airtex components. I had a Then & Now kit like Eric mentioned on one of mine, it all went together fine and worked well. Basically I cut 2 pieces of 1/4" pate to fit between the seat & spring. This raised the seat 1/2". My main reason for making them was to keep the outer edges of the seat off from the fenders.
