A 1045 for a BBT !

My 1075 has the same fuel pump. I like that style. The lever acts like a primer bulb.

Nice seat in great condition. The not-period one that was on there was ready for the scrap pile, for sure!

Speaking of spring-mounted seats....

Has anyone come up with clever ideas to strengthen the spring or otherwise prevent the seat from leaning from side to side and scratching the fender paint (as well as cutting the seat cover)?

When I took the seat off of a project 1045 tractor here that eventually turned into @Oldskool Mike's "Hiram"  it had an extra HD coil spring going from the bottom of the seat to one of the transmission bolts that holds the OE seat bracket on.

Put a small spacer between the seat and spring. Keeps the seat off the fender.

There a particular Tractor you have in mind?...or generally?

Just wondering if you have a thin seat spring maybe?

I like the seat spring system on @Achto’s McLean.  I’ve thought about adding it, or a variation of it, to a spring seat :wh:

It’s in this video here… just don’t mind Jim and Dan razzing me for taking videos

I have that same fuel pump on my 1075. I am looking to have it rebuilt but having trouble finding the correct kit.

I haven't torn into this one yet so I can't say one way or the other here. Some of the older engines had a fuel pump that was driven off of the cam, some did not. I'm not at all sure which one this is or if having a primer lever has an effect on what kit can be used.

Last I knew there was a company in Massachusetts called, Then And Now Automotive, that maybe offering rebuild kits for these.

Its for my 854. The spring and square pan seat appear original or at least period correct.

I can see the McLean dual spring with the rods that keep it aligned working nicely for that chassis. For the 854, I'd prefer not to have a vertical spring in the middle of the toolbox. (The 1045 that went to Trina had the rare optional piece of 4x4 PT lumber in there to hold the seat up so the tool box was pretty useless.)

I am not petite so my spring is bending down a good bit. The spacer idea is promising--a piece of 3” x 1-to-2" rectangular tubing would fit the bottom of the seat and the full width of the spring and I could move the seat back a bit for my long legs since the spring and seat holes wouldn’t have to align. Moving the seat too high or too far back will have my legs hitting the underside of the steering wheel or put too much weight behind the rear axle.

I’m also wondering if, in addition to the spacer, one or two or three of strips of 3” wide x 3mm thick spring steel could be “layered” onto the inside curve of the existing spring to make it stiffer--same idea as truck leaf springs. Punching holes for the bolts at each end might be a challenge but it’d be scarely noticeable blending in with the existing spring.

I had two of those pumps on K-301 powered snowmobiles.. pity they didn't keep the hand primer because it made long term storage starting a breeze.
It should take the standard Carter/Kohler pump diaphragm and valves, not the Airtex components. I had a Then & Now kit like Eric mentioned on one of mine, it all went together fine and worked well.
That was at least 5 years ago, but I'm pretty sure they are still around.

You can see the seat spacer made out of tubing on my 704 I used to have.

At first I was confused but realized there is a bracket going up to a seatback and other brackets going to armrests? ;)

It looks like 1.5 x 4+” tubing with a closure weled/glued into it (or maybe two smaller tubes welded side by side--the angle prevents a good view.

Did you run long bolts through the seat/armrest bracket/tube/backrest bracket/spring or attach bits separately?

How did you handle the ridges on the bottom of the seat that normally straddle the spring to keep it from twisting?

Used a longer bolt. The spacer had 2 weld beads that locked into the seat ridges to prevent twisting.

3 lugs were on my 64 604 and 704. My 65 1075 had 5 lug. 1045's were made with some spare leftover 64 parts so it stands to reason it could have 64 hubs or a 64 transmission.

Brian, any thoughts on this 1045 having the 3 lug nut hubs?

You s'pose it's factory?

Don't seen to have any pics. Basically I cut 2 pieces of 1/4" pate to fit between the seat & spring. This raised the seat 1/2". My main reason for making them was to keep the outer edges of the seat off from the fenders.
