MilanWH 26 #1 Posted August 30, 2022 I'm new here, and wanted to say what a helpful sight this is! I bought a 416-8 about 2 years ago. It was cheap, and I really like the Kohler singles. I've owned several gravely walk behinds with them and all were great. Anyway, the 416 has been fine, but when I bought it, the 42" deck was rusted through in several places. It has been cutting fine, but I've been on the lookout for a nice deck. I saw an add on Facebook for what was described as a near new lightly used wheel horse for cheap, not running, so I had to check it out. I brought it home for $250 thinking the deck is great, been resprayed, but very solid. The tractor has a 16hp Kohler on it so I figured I can part it out, and keep the deck basically for free.Problem is, I don't know what this thing is. Any help you could give would be much appreciated. ebinmaine 67,570 #2 Posted August 30, 2022 I'd be interested to see what you have especially if it has a 16 HP Kohler but the attachments won't open.
MilanWH 26 #3 Posted August 30, 2022 I'm sorry, they open for me. I'm not sure what to do to fix it.
MilanWH 26 #4 Posted August 30, 2022 I think it might be a Frankenstein, the dash has an oil pressure gauge, doesn't make much sense on a Kohler. Unless it's for the hydro trans pressure.

MilanWH 26 #6 Posted August 30, 2022 My mistake, oil pressure light, no gauge. It has a fuel level gauge, RPM gauge, battery charge and vacuum. The Kohler tag says model k341s, spec 71371.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,046 #12 Posted August 30, 2022 Welcome to Red Square. The 71371 spec number was used in the 1985 416-8 model 31-16K801 8-speeed model. Here is what we have on this model - 23 files https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?q=31-16k801&quick=1&type=downloads_file The C1-20OE02 is a 1989 520-HC which is a hydro transmission model. Suspect the above engine was a repower and a good choice at that. Here is what we have on the 520-HC - 29 files https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?&q=c1-20oe02&type=downloads_file&search_and_or=or&sortby=relevancy
MilanWH 26 #13 Posted August 30, 2022 Thank you so much. You say a good choice, is it possible to make the tach work with this repower? It hasn't been completed yet. Also, would it be better if I swapped this Kohler with the magnum in my other tractor? Is the magnum much better, or just minor differences?
MilanWH 26 #14 Posted August 30, 2022 Also is the hood correct for a 520hc?
TJ5208 1,824 #15 Posted August 30, 2022 (edited) Yes the hood is correct. I'm going to say its a 520. Edited August 30, 2022 by TJ Salyers

Basically the K341 is just the predecessor to the Magnum engine. They are both very good engines. In my opinion more reliable than the Onan P 220 that would have originally been in the 520 HC. Are you planning on keeping both tractors?? The "C" in 520 HC stands for commercial use. You will find that the 520 HC has a faster ground speed than standard 's
oliver2-44 9,758 #17 Posted August 31, 2022 The 520HC with a Kohler 16 is a beast of a worker tractor. keep all of it for a 2nd worker. I wish you were closer to me, you could keep the deck and just sell me he whole tractor to get your money back.
bds1984 1,435 #18 Posted August 31, 2022 You can definitely make the tachometer work on this engine. I have a 520 tachometer connected to the K341 that resides in my C165. Of course you will have the power wires connected to the tachometer, the signal wire of the tach will be connected to either of the two outside terminals on the voltage regulator; the tach runs off the a/c output from the stator which is the two outside wires on the regulator, the middle wire is the DC output to charge the battery.

Interesting. I just did some research and both engines have 18-pole stators so the tach will read correctly! Added bold above to emphasize that the tach will have a power input (pink wire, usually) and a sensor input (gray wire, usually). It is the sensor wire that gets connected one of the outside terminals of the voltage regulator. Also be sure the tach's ground connection is solid and clean.
MilanWH 26 #20 Posted August 31, 2022 You guys are great! Oliver2, I think I'm going to try and get the 520HC running, and if I like it, sell the 416-8. BDS1984, thanks, I definitely would like to get the tach working, dead gauges just irritate me. I ran into a problem with the throttle, there isn't a throttle quadrant on the motor to hook the throttle cable up to. I'm not sure what it even looks like, but need to make something work that still lets the governor do it's thing. I'm not sure where to get parts for a discontinued Kohler. Again, thanks for all the info! What a great resource for wheel horse lovers (which I have become).
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,046 #21 Posted August 31, 2022 If you still have the grey tach signal wire try it on one of the AC terminals of the voltage regulator. If it does not work try it on the other AC terminal. Do not remove the connector from the regulator when you do this - keep it working. The AC terminals handle the charge current differently and the reason only one of them will work on the tach. The tach also needs battery power and a ground but they may still be there. MilanWH 26 #22 Posted September 3, 2022 Success! I fiddled with the wiring and got the 520 to start and run. Now I need to figure out what I'm missing in the charging system, and how to properly attach the throttle and choke cables. These 2 wires are all I have to work with, there is no regulator that I can see. Are regulators still available? Maybe at N.A.P.A.? Does anyone know a part number? Any help would be great! Thanks. There were 2 charging systems available for those 16 HP engines. One was a 15 amp. The other a 3 amp. The 15 amp system could perhaps be wired as a mid 70s C160? I'm not familiar with the differences in wiring on the 3 amp. Also not familiar with the 520 system. Others may chime in here.

Those two yellow wires may be from the stator plate. If that is the case, you should be able to connect them to the a/c terminals on a generic voltage regulator. One way you could test them is to use a multimeter on an a/c setting on the wires as the engine is running and test what the voltage output is. It has been a while since I've came in contact with the 3 amp charging system so I don't 100% remember the wire schematic of it but I think it will only have a single wire coming from a diode after the stator wire output. MilanWH 26 #25 Posted September 3, 2022 Thank you BDS, very helpful. I'll check those 2 wires soon, it's raining right now.I fear I may be developing a fairly severe mental issue. I can't figure out how to justify all of the satisfaction I'm getting from getting a 33 year old garden tractor running again! Everyone has been very helpful, and I really appreciate it!
