grinchsr 627 #1 Posted August 29, 2022 Going to take a peek at one tomorrow and was wondering if they have any known issues (Achilles heel). I was told it was a series-1 motor and I have no problem with that as my property is fairly flat. Does any one have the starting serial number for the series-2 motors? Sparky-(Admin) 21,324 #2 Posted August 29, 2022 Should be an 1985 or 1986. The series 1 gets a bad rap, but if it’s still running after 36 years how bad can they really be?? I hear that you need to keep the oil level a smidge over full…and you’ll be fine.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #3 Posted August 29, 2022 The 417 did not come with a series 1. It is a series 2 unless it was replaced. I love that model. Just finished restoring one a few I got at the big show. Good luck keep us posted.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,046 #4 Posted August 29, 2022 Series I and Series-II have different spec numbers.
grinchsr 627 #5 Posted August 29, 2022 I always thought the 417 came in two flavors but a series 2 is a plus. Thanks for the replies guys

Bill D 1,923 #7 Posted August 29, 2022 Good luck with that tractor. I have a KT 17 that I swapped into a 310-8. Great engine. Mine has about 1300 hours on it.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #8 Posted August 29, 2022 Ray, I assume you meant 1985 not 1995 in title. The 85 had no louvers in hood and the 86 did.
grinchsr 627 #9 Posted August 29, 2022 I hate when you assume correctly.
Bill D 1,923 #10 Posted August 29, 2022 Did you buy it?
grinchsr 627 #11 Posted August 29, 2022 I did. I ran the number on the motor and it turns out to be a series 2. It needs TLC but that’s what I like to do

It still looks pretty darn nice to me and the chrome on the engine gives it a nice touch. I had a C175 with a Series II in it, great engine in them with a snarling exhaust note. I regret selling it but it cleared way for a very nice 520H.
