Bill Winn 156 #1 Posted August 22, 2022 Adding this here as I may have posted in the wrong place earlier (What Have You Done... ) So... I got the new tiller mounted and running. The issue is that when I engage the PTO and drop it into the soil it stops turning but the old K-series Kohler keeps running strong. I adjusted the PTO lever a bit tighter and when that did not solve the issue I removed the clutch assembly. Lookie what I found. I have ordered the clutch disc but I am guessing I need a clutch plate/ pully? Bill
ri702bill 8,347 #2 Posted August 22, 2022 Bill - maybe not. Probably easier to change it, but you may be able to have it refaced, like they do with automotive flywheels??
peter lena 8,638 #3 Posted August 22, 2022 @Bill Winn is that a needle bearing in there? looks like a total functional look see on that set up is needed . probably been failing for quite a while . verify every piece and how it functions . never had a clutch go , pete 1
peter lena 8,638 #4 Posted August 22, 2022 @Bill Winn those needle bearings live in a very hot place , and often forgotten , lucas xtra hd chassis grease , green / white tube , 560 deg rated anti sling , polyurea rated , recommended , just enough grease to cover bearing , or it can sling to clutch face area , pete 1

peter lena 8,638 #8 Posted August 23, 2022 @Bill Winn went after every function on my pto , lever related set up , as I went , made changes ,firmed up starting spots / lubrication , eliminated dragging contact areas , installed a heim joint on the end , in place of the trunnion , etc , used the first horse as a test bed for changes , verify operation , thaen did the same to my other 2 horses . pete

We all learn things along our journey, I sure have learned a lot in 60 years !! I enjoy passing on knowledge, or anything I can to help out. His Needle bearing and seal will be very happy with the LUCAS treatment. I use a Different grease on the Button. its yellow and made for underwater. Aquaplex is its name. I like to use it there because some guys like to rinse off more than others and I found through the years that the button can suffer the most from water, its not protected with a seal on the outward side of the PTO, water can easily get in there. OIL IT...DONT SPOIL IT !!! John

Do you happen to remember what the thread size and pitch is on the PTO clutch rod?
peter lena 8,638 #11 Posted August 23, 2022 @Bill Winn , used a 3/8 x 24 die nut , and just went over the existing 3/8 x 16 thread to the old trunnion, used penetrating oil lubricant as the prep/ cleaner during overthread , was very easy , then I just eyeballed it in to approximate trunnion setting . pictures related to this show a number of related lever improvements . engine related ( rectifier ) grounding , plug in battery tender spot . note the washers 3/8 to 7/16 added to the sloppy lever start point , first picture/ grease , that same rail is your battery cable ground point , the corner of engine cable to frame last picture , bolts on to that ground rail . as I went along / changing things , kept adjusting / tweaking every change for its " sweet spot " even today , after years of use , I marvel at how easily this set up works , just ask , pete 1
peter lena 8,638 #12 Posted August 23, 2022 @johnnymag3 did a check on the AQUAPLEX LUBRICANT , like going home ! regularly used industrial everything at PFIZER , or had access to them , most of our production was " food grade " so we definitely had our specific , what we can do , parameter's in keeping with any variation , lab checked to insure its staying inside of lab speck checking . especially liked working on rebuilding , swiss LEWA GEAR PUMPS , basically straight forward simple , but overbuilt with incredible detailing . pete 1

Pete...Aquaplex is a SUPER grease I like using the best oils /gels / greases/ etc. on the Market. It pays off in huge dividends in the life of the tool or mechanism. bearings are high stress tools that make metal on metal work.. Yes...they are parts, but when you look at the job they have to do I call them TOOLS, and great ones at that. Try rolling down the highway with low/no wheel bearing grease. ..Wont last long after the heat gets into them. I take every opportunity to service the heck out of all of my tractors, which are my TOOLS !!!! Going to Service my Four---- 48 inch Decks today when I get home...Have you priced Spindles ??? OIL IT......DONT SPOIL IT !!! John
peter lena 8,638 #14 Posted August 23, 2022 @johnnymag3 have not priced spindles , but have definitely rebuilt them , mine were all 6203( 3/4 ) 2RSC3 ZNL BEARINGS , even did my mule drive bearings , same bearings , wide seal removal , wipe out , carb clean flush , lucas xtra heavy duty , also do the pto needle bearing grease , tell me how smooth and quite that is . also have 4 decks , 3, 42in R/D regular use , 36 R/D been sleeping , but oil soaked , clean and ready . think once you open up a spindle , the opportunity for quiet / smooth operation is just the next step . my mule drive bearings used to get very hot , and whine , not any more , every related bearing is 560 deg lucas . anything I reference , I am using / doing , like my stuff solidly reliable , good talking , questions , just ask , pete 1
