davem1111 2,030 #1 Posted August 22, 2022 I have a 416-8 up for sale (not advertised anywhere, just sitting out by the road at times), and I've fixed a number of minor issues, but have this one remaining that I'm afraid is not an easy fix. When driving it in 2nd gear, it periodically just pops out into neutral. The shift arm does not appear to be hitting the end of the groove on the shift cover plate, i.e. it's going over to the right as far as it will go. Is this a problem with the shift fork or something else inside? I would like to get this sold but will not be dishonest and try to hide the issue, so understandably many buyers would be turned off by this problem. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks. Oh, BTW, it also leaks a small amount of oil from the center seam, so I guess a teardown/rebuild would include fixing that would be a plus. But it's only leaking about 2" diameter "puddle" in around a week so that by itself is not a strong enough motivation for me to crack it open. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I don't guess that it could be chipped gear(s)... Have you drained the fluid lately? See any metal flakes/chunks? It could have been abused before you got the machine... I would say... pull the transmission, and see if you can find a replacement for the gear that is bad... I know what you mean about not wanting to take transmissions apart. Don Had a set of coveralls in HS and removed the trans on my 61 Falcon and got gear oil on them. Scent stayed on them until I wore them out enough (many years) to be able to use them anymore. Gotta love coveralls. As soon as you get them on you have to pee! Friend of mine was doing some welding one night with coveralls on. When he got done he smelled something burning. He went crazy looking for it as he wanted to go in for the night and didn't want to burn his shop down. finally as he was running around, I saw a puff of smoke from the cuff on his foot! 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
oliver2-44 9,758 #7 Posted August 22, 2022 Good possibility the 2nd gear part of the cluster gear is worn Usually it’s 3rd gear and caused by previous owner shifting before stopping/grinding gears. I bought this 416-8 about a year ago (my second WH) after my 312-A was having hydro problems and I was working on getting a replacement hydro pump and decided having a second tractor during those repairs was a good idea. The 416-8 was not in great shape, but it ran. I used it lightly for a while, then after I got the 312-A repaired, started tearing into the 416-8. Among some other "small" issues, like needing to do some welding on the steering column support, I noticed that the trans oil was milky so obviously it had water in it (shifter boot was nothing but crumbles). No idea how long it had sat outside like that. Anyway, I tried to remove the trans drain plug and it would not cooperate. I decided to pull the trans and drain it upside down. Didn't have any diesel around so I used mineral spirits to flush it a few times. Didn't see any metal flakes but I still have the old oil in a tray, but that may only provide evidence of what is already suspected.... Then after cleaning/painting/remounting it I refilled it with 90w. Hadn't really driven it much at this point. Repainted most of the rest of the tractor and prettied it up with new decals, headlight bezels, etc. Fuel pump died at some point so I put a 12v Carbole pump on it. Now the tractor looks great, runs great (after some fiddling to get it started - that's another topic), but has this one nagging issue with 2nd gear. Sigh. So I guess instead of selling it "as is", maybe this winter I will need to tear into the trans and fix that gear. I don't think many people would want to buy it in that condition. I should have tested it more before buying it but I think it was only $400, and the deck I got with it is worth at least 1/2 of that. The other parts and labor I've put into it since then, well.... I think we all know that trying to recover either of those costs in a sale can be "iffy" at best. Since I'm trying to generate some positive cash flow to finance the acquisition of some parts needed for other things, I suppose I could do some quick repairs on the 416-H I picked up recently and resell that one. Unfortunately, I'm having back problems and am pretty sure I cracked at least one rib recently, so I'm not doing much tinkering for a while. Without looking right now, does anyone know if a 1976 8-speed B-100 has the exact same trans as a 1989 416-8? I have a B-100 project tractor that I've done very little with so far, and if they are the same and the B-100 trans is in better shape, maybe I'll do a swap to get the 416-8 sold, and fix the trans for the B-100 later... Load them all into your truck and bring them to me... I will fix them all, paint them, lubricate everything on them... and return them to you.
