moe1965 738 #1 Posted August 21, 2022 Hello all. I'm still working on a b100 auto and was going to change the trans oil and filter. PO must have put trans fluid in it . It calls for sae 10 w 30 oil. Could this be a issue that it was run with the wrong oil. Also what would be the proper oil filter for the trans. Model number is 1 0511. If I did my homework correctly it's a 1975. Thanks in advance
Achto 27,597 #2 Posted August 21, 2022 These are the recommended hydro filters for all Wheel Horse tractors. Wix 51410 = Napa 1410. ATF will not damage your transmission. If it had ATF in it, I would use it again.
953 nut 55,290 #3 Posted August 22, 2022 If you want to go back to 10W30 that would be your decision. I did that on my Sundstrand on a GT-14 switching from ATF to 10W30. It was a rather time consuming process and I saw no change in performance. I drained the old ATF and used a new 51410 filter, drove it around long enough to warm it up and cycled the lift cylinder several times. Then I jacked the front end up, drained the fresh 10W30, installed a new filter and filled it up with 10W30 again. This flush and two filters came to nine quarts of Tractor Supply 10W30 hytran fluid ($42.00)and two Wix 51410 filters ($ 30.00) Mercon ATF is a bit more expensive than 10W30 but unless you are using the tractor for commercial work you probably would come out ahead sticking with ATF.

Thanks in advance My 1276 1966 wheel horse runs a Hydro it says to use Dexron 3 , so that’s what I use when I drained it had Dexron 3 in it , make sure you get a filter for it too if it has one it has to be old new stock of a toro or wheel horse or toro wheelhorse filter because it’s a motor oil filter in a transmission the toro ones have finer screens and stuff ebay has a bunch just put the right numbers in , put a straw in when you fill it to let it breath , mine took a full gallon and still needs a another quart I didn’t get yet but this is what I use Castrol - 03520-3PK 03520C TRANSMAX DEX/MERC ATF, 1 Gallon, Pack of 3 just type that into like google Amazon and Walamart sells it but my local Walmarts has been hard to find also when it says it’s “full” even with a straw it isn’t let it run drive it then park it don’t drive far and check again top off and repeat until it dosnt lower when you drive it
kpinnc 12,082 #5 Posted August 22, 2022 ATF in a Sundstrand works great. It has far better cleaning and anti-corrosion properties than 10w30. I'd be willing to say better anti-wear as well. I still run it in my Sundstrands, and they look like new internally. Wheel Horse started using motor oil in hydros because it was cheaper and easier to get than ATF, not because it was better. Eaton hydros? Motor oil of course because they were engineered to use it.
squonk 41,145 #6 Posted August 22, 2022 The trans may also have been swapped out with an older one that used ATF. Leave it like it is.
clueless 3,002 #7 Posted August 22, 2022 I have a 1977 C-160 hydro, I'm the second owner. According To WH and many here by 1977 it should have 10w30 in the hydro. When I bought it from the original owner, an older gentleman he said he always had it serviced by the dealer he bought it from. When I checked the fluids the hydro had ATF and he said that should be what it came with when new. Stay with the ATF.
Thompson1276 256 #8 Posted August 23, 2022 If you use ATF Dexron 3 like it says make sure you use a HydroGear filter or Toro Wheelhorse or Hweel horse filter for the dinner screening in it since it’s a oil filter number if you do use what others use like the 10weight30 make sure you use a oil filter then and not a Hydro or manual transmission if it is one filter that has that extra screening or you’ll clog your filter but if you use Dexron 3 with a oil filter it won’t be fine enough to filter the Dexron 3 since it’s almost the same density but has different chemical property’s

NEVER use an oil filter on a hydro transmission! You should do your homework before you post information that could end up costing someone else time and money because they follower erroneous suggestions. The NAPA 1410 and WIX 51410 are both intended to be used on hydraulic systems like the Sundstrand/Eaton transmissions and should be used with ATF or 10W30. One difference in a hydraulic oil filter vs an engine oil filter is the filtering capability of the filter paper. Today's hydraulic oil filters have a micron rating of 10 microns. One micron equal 1/2500 of an inch. Most engine oil lifter have a rating of 25 to 40 microns. This means the hydraulic oil filter will remove finer particles and become plugged up faster in engine oil. Finer particles need to be removed from the hydraulic oil due to the much higher pressures seen in a hydraulic system than in an engine oil system. The other thing most is hydraulic filter don't have an internal by pass valve as do most engine oil filters. If the by pass opens at a relatively low pressure as it would in an engine filter the pressure loss would prevent the hydro transmission from working. Don't take my word for it, look it up! squonk 41,145 #11 Posted August 23, 2022 (edited) The filters for all Wheel horse hydro's are the same filter. There is no extra screen in a Toro filter I have torn them apart. Unless you mean the screen inside the trans but that doesn't effect what spin on filter to use. also by now most of those in the trans screens have disintegrated Edited August 23, 2022 by squonk
