Is this 416-8 drive belt routing correct

Recommended Posts

Panther416-8

This is how my drive belt has been routing since I got the tractor about 14 years ago. Looking at some pics on the forum of other 400 series tractors they don't seem to have the small roller that appears in the top right of the photo under the two EEs in 8 SPEED.  It's not a pulley but seems to be an idler roller.

That roller thingy was added by someone. Probably because the belt was too long or they were having trouble with the belt stopping for clutching purposes

Thanks wallfish. It looks as though it's factory but like I stated I haven't seen that set up on any other 400 series. I thought it might have been only on specific years. Either way it's been working for me all these years and the new 82" belt seems to be OK with it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it  IMO

All the power transfer is on the bottom of the belt loop so whatever works for clutching on the top loop doesn't really affect much.

Yeah no that’s no factory from what I know of I could be wrong. Your parking brake is spring tension and when dropped is your belt tensioner  when it’s engaged the pulley and belt is loose, so that is also set up wrong because the belt goes under the top left pulley that’s for your parking break. I have a pic here from my build I did of my 1276.

This was also before I replaced the belt that was the original belt what’s why it has that much slip but with the parking brake down that’s what it should be

Your 1276 has a hydro transmission. The 416-8 being discussed here is a manual trans. Completely different animal

Give or take amost the same set up the pulley at the end and at the front hooks up the same that and the parking break no different than my sears with a pulley in the back for the transmission and hooks to the engine too

The main point was this first statement is completely wrong. Yesbothtractorsdohavepulleysgiveortakeinthesameareaonthem. Maybe someone else can better explain the differences between the belt routing on hydros compared to the manual trans tractors.

@wallfish is correct. The belt routing on a hydro is not the same as a gearjammer. The belt on a gear driven transmission feeds power to the transmission when the belt slack is removed by pulling the belt from the transaxle pulley to the engine. He was not trying to offend you by pointing out the difference between a hydro and a gearjammer, He was trying to be sure @Panther416-8's question was correctly answered without extraneous misinformation confusing the issue.

Thanks wallfish and 953nut. My tractor seems to run fine as is, it's just that a PO installed an additional idler roller which doesn't harm anything, correct? My clutch functions perfect when depressing by giving slack and stopping belt movement until I let the clutch out again. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I wonder if previous owner was having the belt slap against the guard and added that to quiet it down.
