Snoopy11 5,714 #126 Posted September 7, 2022 Well, my starter solenoid and switch are out for delivery today... I may get them installed today... we shall see. Not going to have much time tomorrow... have to go get some bloodwork done. I haven't been feeling quite as "peppy" as usual... having some headaches... lightheadedness at times... I thought maybe it was just that I was spending a little too much time working on the Tecumseh with it running... (maybe 'fume' sickness)... but I haven't noticed a difference the last couple of days... SO... the female lady women are making me go to the doctor. Hopefully the bloodwork shows nothing... Evguy 556 #128 Posted September 8, 2022 SO... the female lady women are making me go to the doctor. Hopefully the bloodwork shows nothing... I hope it is a minor issue, the woman have a tendency to make us get checked out. probably a good thing they do… 2

I got the solenoid put on yesterday, and the momentary flip switch. It cranks right up. @Jeff-C175... this solenoid works great, wired just as we discussed above. Best part about it is... it's got a lifetime warranty. Really, the wiring on this engine is baby-cakes simple. Ground, 2 positive leads for coil power switch and for starter solenoid signal power switch. Only other thing needed is a positive cable from battery to starter solenoid. Snoopy11 5,714 #133 Posted October 18, 2022 Got my new solenoid installed today. I also did some wiring condensing... much cleaner. All it needs is a wire from battery+ ...and for the engine ground to be run to battery- I also changed the oil... I've been running it every now and then for testing purposes. Gosh it runs great for an older engine! Don 2
Snoopy11 5,714 #134 Posted October 20, 2022 The crankcase cover gasket that I put on this engine originally leaked... so being that I like to push my own boundaries of what I think I can physically do... I decided to make a new one today. I have a sheet of gasket maker in the shop... so I decided to use it... and make a new, good gasket instead of waiting on something from China... and hoping that it sealed. Works excellently. Snoopy11 5,714 #135 Posted October 26, 2022 (edited) Well, today this engine got completely torn down. I was thinking about putting this engine on one of my tractors, so I decided to give it a final test run. Glad I did. Engine was purring along at 3,600... then all of a sudden, smoke started coming from the breather, little bits of fiery metal started coming from the exhaust. I knew something was bad wrong... so I shut it down and let it cool. I popped the head... everything seemed okay... nothing that caught my attention. Then I had to pull the crankcase cover. Little metal flakes in the oil... I pulled the rod cap... the crank journal and rod cap still look brand new. Cam lobes look good. Then I rotated the engine over, looking into the cylinder. I saw oil running up and down the cylinder. This engine completely blew out the oil (EDIT: the expander ring). It is no longer in existence. Very unusual. Pics to come later. Snoopy11 5,714 #138 Posted October 26, 2022 After LOT'S and LOT'S of measuring... and determining that the cylinder is well within tolerance... the chicken got on my iphone and ordered a new piston and rings from PSS and cam from AZ tractors... I also bought a breather tube since I accidentally broke the OE tube... Now I need to pick up some assembly lube... and I should have time to reclean the valves and cylinder head... I am relentless... Don
Snoopy11 5,714 #139 Posted October 26, 2022 What I do not understand for the life of me... is if the oil ring got obliterated... which it did (I found pieces of it everywhere in the engine) how did it not scratch the royal crap out of the cylinder walls? I'm serious, the cylinder wall looks spotless!!! I haven't been able to rationalize what happened to this engine... @squonk... would you mind giving your input here? This is a little unusual to me... not something I have encountered before. I will hone the cylinder before installing new piston/rings... Don
squonk 41,104 #140 Posted October 26, 2022 Never seen anything like that but oil rings are pretty whimpy and probably eject when the piston is at the lowest point. If one of the compression rings let go you would have really torn things up.

I don't think I was saying it correctly above, but the only ring that got obliterated is the expander... the control rings themselves are still present. It would still seem to me that if the expander let go, it should have left its mark on the cylinder walls ... Oh well, I guess I don't really need to know... I just need to fix it... Snoopy11 5,714 #142 Posted October 29, 2022 (edited) I finally found the assembly lube (I knew I had some)... AND the permanent air filter came today. Here is the deal. I will still use the air filter adapter that I made for the carburetor... but after measuring... the snorkel that I had on it before will never fit under a tractor hood... so a p-afom-a air filter got ordered. I was hoping that the rest of my engine goodies would have come today... it looks like some will come tomorrow... but most won't come until after Monday. Oh well, I gotta work on leaves tomorrow anyway... Don Edited October 29, 2022 by Snoopy11 flippin pictures didn't post
Snoopy11 5,714 #143 Posted October 29, 2022 Breather tube came today. IT'S ACTUALLY RUBBER!!! The old one was more like plastic 'cause it was so dried out. Other than that, I did some experimenting with spark plugs, cleaning the head. Everything else will have to wait until the parts come... Don
Snoopy11 5,714 #144 Posted October 29, 2022 One thing that I haven't done... partly because I haven't had time... partly because I don't know the clearance tolerances... is mic the crank. I have no reason to believe that there is ANYTHING wrong with the crank, particularly since it looks brand new (which I was amazed to discover)... but better to be safe than sorry... Hopefully, I will be able to find the clearances tonight so I can mic the crank tomorrow... THEN... I have to know the correct torque for the rod bolts... Snoopy11 5,714 #145 Posted October 29, 2022 I thought I posted this manual before, but couldn't find it in this thread. Very good information herein for future thread viewers. Rod must be torqued to 110in-lbs. Crank journal 1.3755... Cylinder head bolts will get 200in-lbs as usual... side cover gets 150in-lbs Don 8 to 18 HP Cast Iron Four Cycle Engines - 691462A.pdf
Snoopy11 5,714 #146 Posted October 30, 2022 I'm happy... I'll have to go to the post office and pick up the camshaft on Monday... C-clips for the wrist pin are there... just not in pictures... I made an offer for a pepper-pot on fleabay... hopefully the seller accepts... Crank journal got mic'd earlier today. I almost can't believe it myself... but the crankshaft is like brand new. The PO(s) of this engine must have used quality oil... Don

Snoopy11 5,714 #148 Posted October 31, 2022 Head is as clean as it is going to get... Rod put on new piston... Notice the notch I made on the rod so I knew how to reinstall it! Breather tube installed How the air filter will look on the carb... Don
Snoopy11 5,714 #149 Posted November 1, 2022 A remaster... hmm... I can't tell if it sounds better than the original or not... Same message though... with my T-shirt on and hat on backwards... This engine will probably still be around when I am an old man, poor man... Last night, I got the engine honed.... (sorry if any of the photos are blurry... the grime from my hands somehow got transferred to the camera)... Cleaned... (Why it's important to clean out the engine after honing...) Piston put in... New cam: I did order a peppa' pot muffler... but it won't come for a couple more days, so when I reassembled... I went ahead and put the old one back on... This picture looks familiar to me... (hint... this engine looks A LOT like my Tillotson 212R when I built it!) Video of the Techy Hh120 running in Google link form so it doesn't get deleted... and to save space on Eric's phone... @ebinmaine https://photos.app.goo.gl/H9xBdgcwx3xx3xwS9 Only thing I have left to do is make a new gasket for the valve cover/breather ...and put the new muffler on.
