Wet rear end

Sounds like a personal problem right?  All kidding aside, I've noticed the transmission on the 416-8 getting wet with gear lube. I wiped it off pretty good an just after a little running I noticed it wet again.  I can't tell where it's coming from but I recently did a gear lube change. When I did it calls for 2 quarts but when I filled it check the stick it still showed low.  Eventually I wound adding almost another quart. That was a few weeks ago. Now when I check the district it's way above the full mark, almost equal to another section of hashmarks above the full line. Could that cause the gear lubethat I'm seeing on the transmission and axles?

Yes. As gear lube heats up it expands and you are already way over full. The dipstick handle has a tiny vent on it. Is it dry?

Hi squonk, I don't see any vent on the dipstick near the handle but yeah it seems dry although I might have wiped that off when I checked the oil earlier. I guess first thing is to drain some oil back out. If I loosen the drain plug a little is it OK to not redo the Teflon tape on the threads when I tighten back in? Or is it even necessary with an NPT fitting?

The handle of the dipstick is hollow. It vents through the handle.

There should be no need for Teflon tape if the plug or trans casing are not damaged.

Thanks for the info about the dipstick handle Don. After lowering the level and cleaning the trans case off real good I drove it around for a while going through the gears.  No signs of any gear lube leaking out anywhere.

And, for what it's worth, the shifter where it enters the Unidrive under the dust boot does the same (also allows water in when it rains, shifter acts like a wick...)

Good point on the stick shifts. Hydros have only the one way to vent (even if they're angry :hide:).
