Gasket Sealer or No Gasket Sealer

Recommended Posts

DeepH2O

Just got done rebuilding my 8 speed trans thanks to @stevasaurus  Now, I’m ready to go back together with the case. The repair manual states “ Install a new case gasket holding it in place with gasket sealer…..”. Now, if I’ve cleaned the sealing surface really good, do I still need sealer? If so, what do y’all recommend?

Also, what about sealer on the Kohler M12s cylinder head metal gasket?

No sealer on the trans gasket and no sealer on the head gasket.  :occasion-xmas:

Dont know if it exactly 'kosher' but I like to 'pat' a little film of oil on the bottom piece just for the simple reason that it helps keep that thin gasket kinda 'stuck' and not flopping around til i can get the bolts started.

Might be a use for Pete's green sticky grease.

I have used a glue stick on the four corners of the gasket to hold it in place. Check over both halves of the case to be sure the mating surfaces aren't scratched or have any dings in them but no sealer on the gasket surface. As for the head gasket no sealer there also but after a five minute break in run you should let it cool and retorque the head bolts.

That’s great advice!! Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind with head bolts

I used a small amount of Permatex #2 - the non-hardening kind at the corners of the lower case half to hold the ends of the gasket - none on the upper half, No leaks, no issues.

I spray a light coat of this stuff on the gasket to help hold it in place.
