Got this Lawn Ranger running today. Took it for a nice little ride down the road and back. Looking for a deck for it now.

@CRAZYFROG nice pick up , use that road ride to warm up your trans gear oil , for a more thorough  drain / refill . done that for years , always do a road ride , and using every gear , for a distance , before my draining . regularly look at that oil status , drop it every other year , keep shift boot fresh , pete

The circus was in town at fairgrounds last night. Lol, I actually thought about dressing up as a clown and riding up there from the house. But I got called out on a tow. Didn't happen! 🤣🤣🤣

It is an H60 that someone converted to an external coil ignition system.  Not something i have seen before and not sure how you do it.  The fuse like things are diodes for the fixed charging system.  Engine ID is stamped into the air shroud.

be interesting to see how they wired the coil...

I know what should be under the hood, but a 6hp tecumseh dosnt have a coil like that. Looks like a Lauson Tecumseh. I am with @pfrederi. I never seen an external coil set up like that. That being said with the other photos showing the engine i believe it to be original except for the coil set up.

Pretty sure it's for the charging system.

Absolutely agreed.

Could a spark signal be picked up off the alternator system somehow?

@CRAZYFROG

I'd love to see pics or video of how that rig is wired.

Where do the small wires go to n from that are on the coil?

Schematic diagram would be fantastic.

I'll see what I can do. I'm in the middle of a total tear down of an rj58 to restore.

My opinion, they probably removed the coil from the magneto, left points in place. Ran a wire from th

negative side of coil to points, hot wire from switch to other side of coil.I think this way it would fire the

engine just like the Kohler setup would. You are using the coil you see instead of the magneto coil.

Clever idea but since they had to pull the flywheel to do it why not just replace the mag...  :eusa-think:

Take a look under the hood stand and see if it is a L-157, a 1967 model. From the picture it looks like the belt guard does not have the indentation for the Lawn Ranger decal and 1967 was the last year model to do that. In 1968 the belt guard was smooth and blank.

I had an L-156 and my belt guard was smooth. I can say for certain that it wasn't replaced at some point.

My L107 has the smooth belt guard.  Father bought it new in May 67 so I am sure belt guard is original...

Your engine is a Tecumseh H-60 with electric start & pull rope, 6 HP.  The wiring you show on the side is the diodes & fuse for the charging system. Mine has a removable plastic cover over it.  Mine is on a 1967 Lawn Ranger model L-157.F8DADE2B-BDA9-4A56-9B1A-4946F2256BA9.jpeg.13bebf9bf6e351bf01e774b0cf8816a1.jpegE2E378C4-BA03-4C4D-B857-EF9A3FE4B196.jpeg.6f6ee9ec1e5fcbca21bd8bd08ca5d1d7.jpeg

:confusion-confused:   Last time I was looking at a magneto coil for a Tecumseh they were easy to find and not too expensive.    :confusion-shrug:   Guess he just had the battery ignition coil on hand and decided to use it.
