Sounds typical *** crap - one of my grand sons just moved the past spring to get out from under the rediculous stuff they can come up with.

A temporary fix ...maybe... would be to flip the gear over.

:text-welcomeconfetti:to the forum.  Great bunch of folks here.  Collectively,  we've probably broken and fixed just about everything on a Wheel Horse that can be broken and repaired.  We like to brag er rather pass on advice about the repair, too.

With a gear that worn, you might want to think about replacing both gears.

Thanks everyone!  I believe that is the correct gear Bob.   I will measure this at home tonight!  I would like to keep this tractor going for a long time.  - Dave

Hey Dave (Keith),

Nice to meet you today. Hope you get that mower working so the HOA doesn't give you a hard time.

Thanks to everyone for your help!  Bob is a first class guy.  It was great to meet him.

When I was taking the blade shaft off, 3 washers popped out.. Now I am not sure the ORDER to put them back in.. two are solid and one has notches.. almost look like tiny bearings in it.. they go right on this hole, under the gear in the first pic.  does anyone know the order of these?

p.s.  The gear in the pic BTW must be harder than the gear that wore off.. I think this occurred bc the bolts came loose in the pic.. someone had them on before me with no lock washers.

p.s.s. Last, I feel kind of dumb asking this but cant find on here were you become a member?

Yes, that "notched" thing is a thrust bearing and it gets sandwiched between the two washers and it is CRITICAL to correct operation. Its job is to support the weight and reduce the friction of the rotating gear/shaft/blade.

Do not simply reinstall them! You can de-grease and relube the bearings and then test them by rolling them between the two washers. You are feeling how well the rollers (captive in the cage) roll. If you feel even the slightest bumpiness, then one or more of the rollers has been "flatted" and the entire bearing is junk.

It may be easier to simply replace them--they are easily obtained and not very expensive. I just bought two on Amazon here.

The installation (top to bottom) is: C-clip (not shown), Gear (13), top washer (12),  bearing (11), bottom washer (12)

Glad to hear you got another gear. Good luck!

The gears are both cast iron and pretty similar in wearability.

The most likely causes of the damage you saw are having a blade strike something hard or that the spindle bearings are worn out. If you put the spindle in the deck without the top gear attached, it should have no "wiggle" or lateral play AT ALL. If there is play, c'mon back and we'll discuss spindle bearings.

You are already a member. Become a supporter by "ordering" it at the store, here (and get you handle in RED)

Thanks much Don.  Whew I am glad I asked.  I did not realize there was a process. Going to look for the manual on this tractor too!

Uh oh, this spindle has some wiggle room.. I wonder if the other does as well.. I guess Id better check the whole deck out at this point.  I might also want to get a new top gear.. I have no idea if the top gear is worn either and dont want to end up doing this twice.. Looks like maybe a pressed in bearing on the deck?  Anyone know where to get that and how to get it out?  Anything else I can check?

Wiggle here means the lower gear moves around while spinning and that speeds up wear on both gears. It also means the blade tips are moving up and down as well. And yes, if one spindle is wiggling then probably both are! Remember, the RM-326 and RM-366 are 57 years old--wear is to be expected.

New spindle bearings are readily available at about $10 each. There are two for each spindle plus an oil seal at the bottom to keep mown debris out of the lower bearing--WH part #'s are 1508 spindle bearing (4) and 1303 oil seat (2). I crossed those to Koyo B-1212 needle bearings and Timken 312518 seals via a local supplier I try to support but new ones are also available at Wheel Horse Parts and MoreA-to-Z Tractor, I'd guess that @76c12091520h has them, as well.

I've just removed all of those from the deck I'm rebuilding. I used a brass rod punch to knock out the old bearings (there is a space between them inside the bore so you can work them out). Be very cautious, though, not to break the (reportedly brittle) cast iron plate--keep it very well supported and braced. I clamped mine down to a worktable over spacer blocks while working on it. Understand that removing the bearings destroys them..

@ri702bill can make you a spindle bearing installation tool per the bearing manufacturer's specs--I have one from him. Drop him a PM. Highly NOT recommended to hammer them in--they are designed to be pressed using a tool.

I haven't found a source for new gears for the horizontal shaft, but I have usable ones for my purposes. Remember to check for wear in the cross-shaft bearings as well! These are also a standard sealed ball bearings available at the same vendors (WH part # 1515). Note that these are "peened" into their mounts so replacement is a bit trickier (those mounts are castings and excessive tightening of their bolts can strip them),

One last note, the small bolts you thought we're missing lockwashers are not supposed to have them. When reassembling, I recommend using new Nylock nuts--that was the factory setup.

If stripped out, they can be fixed using Heli-coils, but not the "fat" threaded inserts that use a larger standard tap - not enough room...
