C-125 PULLING POWER

Recommended Posts

Mickwhitt

Hi all,

C-125 8 SPEED, 12hp.

Will it be up to pulling a 300kg (600lb) draw bar flail mower?

The dealer doesn't think it will, I'm pretty sure it should.

Maybe he just wants to sell me a quad to pull it.

Over to you experienced folk.

Mick

Draw bar flail mower.  I'm assuming that is a self powered flail mower that gets towed around.

My 14 horse 8 speed will move my 17' Coleman caravan trailer (weighs about 5000lb) around without problems.   Now, making it stop is a different story!  I restrict this type of activity to slow speeds and level ground.  The tractor easily moves 1700 lb of pontoon and trailer around as well.

I'm pretty sure it will handle the weight, yes it's a self powered flail on a draw bar.

I'll be cutting at low speed so it won't be an issue to be in low range.

I'll have a go at towing my car with Fred tomorrow.

I'm with you @Mickwhitt, it should handle it. It's only pulling the 'rolling' weight.

You can probably maneuver the mower by hand pretty easily.

@Mickwhitt   in low range , hi gear , don't really see a problem , that self power only enhances it mowing thru grass , might experiment , with gear , another thing in low range you will have good ground movement control , go easy into it , to see how it responds , pete

Mick I've towed over 1,000 lbs with my 1974 c160-8, many times.. up steep sections of the acreage.

As stated above and it warrants additional attention...

You'll find it's not about how much you can PULL but about how much you can STOP.

The personnel at this dealership are obviously not the least bit familiar with old school garden tractors and the WORK they will perform.

:text-yeahthat: my 14-8 is a '73 or a '74.  Eric's C 160 is its larger cousin by 2hp.  I'll mention that the only additional weight on my tractor is the operator - no wheel weights or loaded tires like Eric is running.

I pull my roller around in hi range no problem. Weighs aboot 1000# filled with water, don't have super steep hills, but have some inclines. I'd say your fine....

I would be interested in knowing three things; the terrain, the diameter of wheels on the mower, and the condition of your drive belt. Smooth terrain, large wheels, and a fresh belt should do it.

Here is a photo of mine Mick, I don’t know what it weighs, but my C121 has no trouble at all handling it.  It has a 4ft wide rotor, 11 hp Honda engine, modified from a front mounted ‘quad’ mounted unit. With the wheels at the rear it adds a nice bit of weight to assist traction. With the wheels at the sides, you get less drawbar weight, but less traction assist, plus, it makes the whole unit wider for access through gateways, and mowing against fences, etc. The drawbar ‘flips’ over to allow the unit to, either follow directly behind, or to run offset to the left. Must remember to grease it with the ‘Lucas Green’ before next use!

product_f_m_fm120_rotor_e-1.jpg.a710a19e9026b2b08441fe9bd5547fcc.jpgThis is the beastie I am looking at.

I'm going up to the dealership this week to see one in the flesh.

When you watch videos of them in use at the back of a quad bike they seem to travel too fast, but I'm not sure about the gearing of a quad.

The reason I want one us because the 20 acre site has tall grass on it and we've had a few fires started by kids recently.  Cutting paths acted as firebreaks and I'd like to cut a few more.

We will see if it's the right kind of machine for the job.

OK, popped up to the dealer.

Beautiful machine, very well built and probably too much machine for the job we intend. But if someone else is paying let's do it.

It was easy to move around by hand despite being 400kg, it's so well balanced.

The salesman said I could try it on a Wheelhorse but at my own risk. He did recommend a quad bike 500cc to pull it no problems.

Well he would at 9 grand. Lol

I will let you know how things progress if the money is forthcoming.

C-81 with about 1000 pounds of shingles in the trailer, your C-125 will pull that around like it's not even there.

:wh: transmissions are designed to pull, like you said, dealer is just trying to sell you a quad.

https://youtu.be/7Zlvpmid-A4 this is a link for a flail mower , if you look , at about 1.38 , it would appear to be demonstrated being used behind a wheel horse . Geoff .

No problem pulling the horse trailer and it's full of my stuff. And you guys know how heavy grass it no problem moving this either. And i didn't have any trouble stopping either trailers. If this makes it better I had to pull the horse trailer up on blocks so you can see they will pull. That guy does not know nothing about Wheel Horses.
