Ashton Vancoutren 36 #1 Posted July 30, 2022 I need help iding this horse. It has 502 on the belt guard but it has what I believe to be a battery box which would make it a 552? Wild Bill in VA 1,452 #4 Posted July 31, 2022 Yes the tractor is a 1962 model 502, which used a recoil start Tecumseh engine. OK it does have a battery box BUT the box is a toolbox. When Wheel Horse made the battery retainer bracket for the early round hood models the bracket was welded in place to the frame so if the model was a recoil start version, they added a small metal box to fit in and helped sell the tractor by not leaving an unknown part on the tractor ..... it gave the bracket a purpose! The note showing it was a model 502 was the ON/OFF switch on the dash, the recoil start Tecumseh grounded out the ignition where as a model 552 or 702 with electric start used a key type of ignition switch. ri702bill 8,319 #8 Posted July 31, 2022 (edited) I agree it IS a 502 also, but, the adjustable deck height adjuster is from a 1963 or later version. The original had a 2 position quadrant - up and way down. Looks like a one piece fuel tank is from a 701 or 702 - not a bad thing, as it eliminates the leak prone perimeter gasket... the 502 had the 2 piece tank. The shifter dust boot looks like it needs to be replaced - a perfect time to drain the Unidrive and remove the shifter. If the oil comes out rusty or milky, flush the unit before filling. It is super easy to refill the Unidrive using the upper hole with the shifter removed. If you go with a H60, you will need the missing engine mounting plate, it is wider than a snowblower plate. Kevin: The side profile shows a seperate bolt-on dash and the gas cap location is a tad more forward on the 701 / 702 style. The other picture showing the dash as viewed fron the seat shows one of the four #8-32 dash mounting screws - the 502 dash was part of the upper tank casting. @Ashton Vancoutren - @Pullstart's last picture shows the correct 502 style 2 position height quadrant as I mentioned earlier. - I prefer the adjustable one for plowing. ri702bill 8,319 #13 Posted July 31, 2022 (edited) Here are a couple of pictures from an old listing on 'bay - I have one on my 502, can give you the overall size in a bit ... OK, measured mine. It is 5-3/4 inches wide x 8-1/2 inches long and measures 1-1/8 inches tall. It is 1/8 inch thick formed steel. Using this plate puts your engine drive pulley in the correct position (X,Y,and Z) for belt length and allows the 502 belt guard forward hole to locate correctly using a 5/16-24 screw onto the Tecky engine. Pullstart switched to a 8HP Kohler and had to modify his Tecumseh style guard to fit (IF he had used a 702 guard it would have bolted right in for his application)...
