Goldnboy 927 #1 Posted July 26, 2022 How does someone know when they need to change the breather filter? I see some engines that are clean and some like this that is dirty. I know the breather releases tiny oil vapor and this engine always looks this way but others seem clean.

wallfish 17,014 #3 Posted July 26, 2022 The case breather only allows air out of the case. A check valve in there stops air from going in. Any dust dirt and grime going into your engine case is going to come from the carb and get caught in the oil. Change your oil. The case breather is not a routine maintenance item but you can remove it and wash it out with solvent or gas. A clogged breather will cause excessive case pressure and a typical indication it's clogged on a Kohler is that the excess pressure will push oil out of the governor shaft. Worn rings can cause excessive case pressure too and therefore push more air out of the case breather. Your engine looks typical of any worker tractor and the perfectly clean ones you see are trailer queens or someone that cleans their tractor engine more often.

This pretty much answers what I was thinking!
