Repowered RJ58 project

Recommended Posts

clip

Found an RJ Saturday that needed some help, included an odd front mount, homemade slot hitch and a 32" deck in pieces. Looks semi-complete, but was repowered in the past with an old Briggs 6hp and the hood was raised to accommodate .Transmission looks and feels to be in good shape. Tires are (original?) BFG Silvertowns and Firestones up front, with front wheels that look to be weld-repaired. Also need bearing blocks for the 32" deck, as well as a handful of other parts.

Hood has had some welding done on it in the past so I'll need to break out the TIG and reweld. Since it's not original, I'm not too worried about swapping engines again and would like to get the hood back down to stock height, cleaning up the sheet metal as I go. Frame and sheet metal will get a repaint, trans will get refreshed if needed but primary focus is getting a shorter engine set.

Does anyone have a height dimension of the Kohler K90? Coworker has a spare Predator 6hp, but looks like a 3hp Predator is also available.

Nice find. At least they didn't cut the back of the hood off like many do.

Finding a K91 shouldn't be that difficult

Putting wanted ads on here in the classified section will help for finding the stuff you need/want

If you decide to go with Predator, the 6hp will fit nicely after you remove the gas tank, air cleaner, and muffler.

Before looking to do any work or spend money to swap the engine see if the Briggs and Stratton runs and test the transmission. The old side plate transmission was not the strongest and if it was run low on oil repairs can get expensive.
