Help fixing steering

Recommended Posts

Wheel horse 704. Steering axle support. See image.

So what to do? Can't find 4412 anywhere. It worked wedged together but it feels kinda bad. It has already been welded once.

Also the sector is welded to the steering axle but that is easier to find and easier to fix I think.

Welcome - Sorry to see the broken part... but... it is probably the victim, not the single issue nor cause. These usually break from forces, like plowing, that set up vibration and twisting forces into the frame. It is cast iron, not "easily" welded in a home shop.

There was a posting here a while back listing 3 "interchangable" part numbers - your early style, a later version with a thin - very thin bronze bushing for the lower shaft, and a more recent design with the bushing, but the ears that broke are thicker to resist breakage.

You need to check the "F" plate at the end of the frame for cracks, twist and damage. This one from a parts 854 I bought years ago had the broken lower steering mount like yours and 3 of the 4 holes cracked out, along with a bad twist. It was a plow tractor all its life.... on uneven ground it wiggled like an inchworm.

WHX??

Very common to see those broke. I have several tractors where they were welded. Fortunately, they can be had off parts tractors and are pretty available, over here anyway.

Suggestions to find one would be put an ad in classifieds - wanted.

Write Lincoln at A-Z tractors. Chances are good he may have one. https://a-ztractor.com/

Here on my site it is extremely hard to get any original Wheelhorse or even Parts.
That was my reason to buy my 656 in USA and ship it to here.

I learned Cast iron must be Welded ideal in Stages.
Prewarm it up to at least 3-400*C, than Weld it, and slowly cool it down if it should last.
To Cooling it down, gently slow it over with a  burner or a heatgun after Welding to relax the Cast iron after Welding.

Also there are special Electrodes available for Cast Iron.
I tried this once on a Exhaust manifold on my Merceds Truck with very good result,
but a higher Amperage Welder is needed to penetrate the Cast Iron deep enough.

Also it must be good prepared before the Welding - cleaned - that it last.

For me, i would ask if anybody have a Piece for sale and is willing to ship it overseas if it should be an original Part.
Maybe @Pullstart have one for sale or @Stormin knows a source.

If it couldn’t be found, i would fabricate it myself from Steel.

Sorry, that i can’t help here more.

Cast iron can be welded but it is a bit of a proces as @Tractorhead mentioned.

Another option besides fabricating the part is to find someone who can braze or silversolder the part. For cast iron brazing is a good repair method.

I had to replace the same part a couple years ago on my 312-A.  Part number is 109733.  Not sure if this would fit your tractor, but it looks very similar.

@Bastkerg

When I replaced one a year or two ago I was told that there were two types, one was 'heavy duty' and may have had a different part number but I'm not certain of that.  The vendor (K&B) asked which one I wanted, opted for the heavy duty of course! (same price).

I don't know if Brian ships over the pond or not, but it's worth an email.
