josephbruce11212@gmail.co 262 #1 Posted July 25, 2022 Hey all! Just feeling the waters. I'm in between restoring my 605 or taking it the other direction and modding it a little. Maybe repower with a Vanguard 9hp? Maybe a Kohler 6.5? Patina? Paint? I'm all over the place. I know there are some die hard "keep it originals" as well as some "turn it into a mudders". Maybe a speed tractor....Just thought I would get everyone's thoughts.
johnnymag3 2,520 #2 Posted July 25, 2022 Cool Tractor...I think its past the Patina stage.....any route you take is a good one, get some wheels for that baby !!! As long as its not being scrapped...its a great thing !!
Ed Kennell 38,232 #3 Posted July 25, 2022 She looks like she has spent some time under water. Is the tranny OK?
The Freightliner Guy 1,327 #4 Posted July 25, 2022 I much more prefer stuff that is stock but I make exceptions for most stuff of mine but I say rust gives it a great story but you do you I’m just saying I’d prefer stock

Personally I feel a Wheel Horse is to good a tractor to use for mudding but i'm also no 'it's only original once' type of guy. I'd say give it some nice paint and (fine) tune it a bit 2
Pullstart 62,916 #12 Posted July 25, 2022 I bet you’d be surprised by some 600 grit paper and some soapy water… how much paint is hiding under that rust!
The Freightliner Guy 1,327 #13 Posted July 25, 2022 Yeah some new paint would make it look as good as pullstarts tractors

D_Mac 8,623 #15 Posted July 26, 2022 I brought worse then that back to life again. No one is going to be able to answer those questions for you. Everything is repairable it's just how much time and money you want to throw at it. Get it running and driving again then worry about what it looks like. What ever you do I would keep those rear lights ! 2

Wild Bill in VA 1,452 #20 Posted July 26, 2022 I can tell you that the Tecumseh on the frame rails is not the original engine. A model 605 would be a recoil only start model, if it's a 655 the engine cover would have a dished shaped wire screen covering the flywheel opening. To me if the engine runs and the transmission operates then just use the tractor! Wild Bill in Richmond VA
ineedanother 1,369 #21 Posted July 26, 2022 Well, I think that was the best hood decal ever and I know you could get a reproduction, but if nothing is rusted through I would probably try oiling it down to get a better idea of what's there and try to just go with it. A stage 4 patina of sorts with a new seat might be quite attractive. 1

I do have points and condenser coming today to see if I can get this to lick off. If it does run, its staying, if not, possible repower.
josephbruce11212@gmail.co 262 #23 Posted July 26, 2022 I have some boiled linseed and mineral oils coming tomorrow...I think a patina might work. 1
19richie66 17,508 #24 Posted July 27, 2022 If you use boiled linseed oil, do not wad your rags up and throw them in the trash. They can get hot enough to ignite. 🔥
