RD deck converted to SD

Recommended Posts

I saw a B-112 on Marketplace that had what appeared to be a RD deck somewhat crudely converted to side discharge. I was looking for something small with a RD deck to pull a lawn sweeper for fall leaf cleanup, so I bought it (traded for it actually), hoping I could 'deconvert' it.

Today I took the deck off and found just what I was hoping to find - a RD deck that somebody had cut the right side off, added a chute and added baffles. It should be pretty easy to turn it back into a RD deck.

What I can't understand is why someone would go to all that trouble, when it likely would have been relatively easy to find someone to trade a SD deck for it, or just sell it and buy a SD deck. Has anybody seen this done before?  It seems a little crazy.

On a side note, I didn't download the manual yet, but with the deck raised all the way, it still cuts too low. I have the lift cable as tight as possible. I have a 211-SB that also cuts too low. Is this just a Wheel Horse thing with vertical engine units? Were they maybe assuming these were going to be used on small lots, and people with small lots keep their grass short?

Well, I was wrong about this deck being converted from a rear discharge deck. I just saw an identical NOS shell for sale on Marketplace (where I 'borrowed' the two pictures), and that one definitely came from the factory that way.

I originally thought someone converted it because it didn't 'look' factory, there was rust on the opposite sides of the welds making me think hat it was welded after being painted, and the welds looked to be far from professional work.

I'm probably still going to change it to a RD deck

I ran a side discharge deck for a few years and then got a rear discharge deck, I am very pleased with the rear discharge unit.

I had a nice '74 C-120 Automatic that had a rear discharge deck. I really regret selling it.
