That's the spindle. Goes in the end of the axle.

Happens to the best of us Joe.

It's been said that just as a hair covered horse is a herd animal... so is a paint covered Horse.

You best make sure you have plenty of storage space.

Best option for "smoothing" dimpled body parts? 20220728_133352.jpg.a319e7d66f4506ff907d5169738a7b2d.jpg

You will, of course, have an extra challenge having done the linseed oil treatment, getting the surface back to paint-accepting clean.

I live with dimpling unless it's affecting structure. After I've gotten the accessible rust/paint off (using a combo of e-tank, angle grinder with paint removing disk/stiffwire wheel, pointy scraper tool, scotchbrite, etc. as needed), I use a soft wire brush in a drill that will reach down a bit to be sure I've gotten as much scale out as I can. Then I use a stiff brush to apply and work in Rustoleum Rusty Metal primer, if it's a non-visible part like the frame or underside of a fender, hood, or deck shell. If I don't want brush marks showing, then 3-4 light coats of the same sprayed. Applied 30 minutes apart

Others here who are after a smoother finish use a needle scaler to really clean the pits and follow with a bonding primer and then body filler or a filler primer.

@Handy Donyea, I'm going to work on removing the oil treatment over a few days. Ill use purple up, gas, brake cleaner, combo of all. I'm sure it will eventually come off. I wanted to see if if I liked it enough to keep. I do like it, but if I'm already taking the complete tractor apart, I might as well paint! I'll prep as best I can using all the mentioned technics. It doesn't need to be perfect, it still has a story to tell. Might go with a filler primer, we shall see. It is cleaning up quite nice though!

I would use a needle gun to remove the rust remaining in the pits as well as the surface coatings. Fallow this up with a DA sander with 220 to remove what the needles may have missed.

In this order... grinder with flap discs... bondo... sander... filler primer... sander... primer... more primer... paint...

I was wondering why the right front was making such sharp turns. I thought it was all due to the different rim and washers on the left....seems the plate is a bit off?

The factory’s welding accuracy wasn’t always stellar!

Agreed. Likely not bent but welded that way many many moons ago. I've had one or two come through my workshop that way.
