Rubber shifter boot must have been rotten for years, and the P.O. had left it outside a lot obviously. Looks like you were able to free up the drain plug, which is more than I can say for myself. I took the whole trans off and turn it upside down to drain. Flushed twice, new oil, new shifter boot. Repainted while off. As long as a bunch of metal shavings didn't come out also, you should be fine. 1

josephbruce11212@gmail.co 262 #82 Posted July 27, 2022 Ok, I have flushed the transmission 2x with diesel. Each time color was lighter and no signs of debris. I will flush 2x tomorrow. I do have a question, once flushed, do I need to let the residual diesel evap? Is a little diesel ok with new oil? Should I fill with oil, drain, then refill again? Also, is this Travellers OK for the transmission?
The Freightliner Guy 1,327 #83 Posted July 27, 2022 Yeah probably try and flush out as much diesel you can just in case
rjg854 11,356 #84 Posted July 28, 2022 In a 4 speed transmission you want 80-90 gear lube. 2
Handy Don 12,201 #85 Posted July 28, 2022 This is important. Read the manual. Follow it. Pretty much any 80-90 weight gear lube is fine. Auto Trans Fluid is NOT fine. I hope you've been lifting the front of the tractor (if safe, as much as 24") to help empty the transmission. There is a "hump" across the bottom in the middle that lets a pool collect in front of it. A bit of residual diesel will harm nothing.

Hydraulic fluid in a universal form is probably pretty thin. There really should be some sort of designation on that bottle somewhere and you'll likely find it's around 10w or 20w.
