Water cooled 4 cyl Wheel Horse I Have ID# Where is Model # Located on Frame

Recommended Posts

Copperhead300

Just acquired a Wheel Horse Tractor with front and rear pto, hydraulic 3-point lift, 4-cylinder water cooled engine. It has a 4-speed transmission with a high and low range.

Wanting to find more information on it and the engine. The ID Plate states   ID# is 6120RG01 010591 below this number is stamped "USED" 6010 "USED". Could it be a model 6010?

The 4-cylinder engine has a plate TYPE # 800-01, 1305920.  I think the 1305920 is the SN.

Any info you might share would be greatly appreciated.

Your Wheel Horse model D-250 has a Renault industrial gas engine rated at 19.5 HP but the true horse power rating is 28 HP. Replacement parts are still available but the brass gear in the transmission is generally only found in Germany, where the transmission was manufactured.

Another fun fact about the Renault 4-cylinder engine is that even though we call it an industrial engine (for generators, forklifts and marine) it was used by Renault in the 1970's Alpine sports car and could be built to produce 125 HP.

You have a potentially unique tractor.

Some prototype, demonstration, and early production tractors that were deemed “close enough” to production tractors were assigned a model number of the production model machine and were given the USED serial number.

it’s possible if you park yours next to another 1976 D-250 that you’ll find some minor differences here and there.

These USED tractors were probably mostly located in South Bend but I’d guess  some emigrated with their owners over the years.

The D-250’s were sort of Wheel Horse’s Edsel.  They were ahead of their time but were slow sellers.  There were 1000 imported in 1976, then 500 each in 1978 and 1979.  They maintained a presence in dealer and factory inventory into the early 1980’s.

I’ve posted quite a bit about them on here.   Every collector should have one in their barn.  As a working machine you have to be wary of the transaxle and keep the gear oil clean and full.

great tractors to have. And yours is likely one of a kind.

Are these tractors a 100% Wheel Horse product? Reminds me a lot of the Holder B18 or B19.

This tractor was manufactured by Gutbrod for distributor Wheel Horse in Bubingen, Germany, so basically 99% Gutbrod.

I have a 76 250. It has it's issues, mainly the trans which 95% of them do. Also, the motor seems to run OK but has no power. Only thing I haven't checked is the timing. They are a beast of a machine tho, not that a 520 is huge, but they dwarf a 520 lol. There is a site in German that specializes in these, got a lot cool stuff. They make a 4wd version, but it's rare even over there....
