Hydrostatic Transmission Oil????

Recommended Posts

Thompson1276

I have a 1966 wheel horse 1276 im restoring and going to teardown and it needs the oil and filter replaced I have the filter on the way but the oil in it now is like automatic transmission fluid already it’s half full since I had it I’d had had automatic transmission fluid in it probably since 1990 since it sat for a good 20 years , but the web says to use …Engine Oil? In a Transmission should I use the engine oil and change the damn oil every season I barely drive it but it’s my main tractor I got engine oil for a year in it , because I don’t feel like spending 50 or more on oil and finding a oem filter to get that changed every season or does that not matter and if not will just regular automatic transmission fluid like what’s in it good for it still I never had a problem with it but it’s going to be 60 years old in a few year not many and only 800 models was made and was made for one year I really don’t wanna blow the transmission out of it

Nice resto project! Varying opinions on fluid for you transmission but dex II or III will likely be the consensus since that's what you've got in there. Keep the filter and fluid clean and it should serve you well. Here is a related thread:

...and here's some punctuation I can loan you for the paragraph above if you're interested (..,,;;!..,,::;,,) :ychain::lol:

I have a 1972 Bronco 14 with, essentially, the same Automatic as th 1276 has.  For the past several years, I've used Valvoline DexIII / Mercon and never an issue.  Valvoline Automotive Fluid, Dexron III(R)/Mercon(R) 798153

The Eaton in my 520H recommends regular 10w30 motor oil. That's what I have used for 30 years. Older models may differ. Color will  tell you if it is motor oil or ATF. Red ATF, Brown Motor oil.

mobil 1 10w-30 for me!  the oil does not need to be changed every year...  it should not be getting contaminated since its a closed system and not a combustion engine....

It is said that if you find auto transmission fluid in your transmission, you should keep using auto transmission fluid.  If you find engine oil, keep using engine oil.

73 is about the time they switched from ATF to motor oil. Always pays to check.
