Mikuni carb 277-62302-60 trouble

Recommended Posts

Horse Newbie

This may belong in “Other Brands” because this carb came off of my neighbors go cart…

Subaru engine.

The engine ran for a few seconds on a shot of brake cleaner. Then died…

Sure enough carb is gunked up. Plan is to soak overnight in GUNK carb solvent, you know, in the gallon can.

Instructions say do not put plastic parts in the solvent, but I could not get the hinge pin out on the plastic float. Other parts that were plastic I could not get off either.

Have any of you guys had terrible results doing this, or good results ?

The plastic thing that the governor rod attaches to will barely turn… guess it controls the throttle plate right ?  … and it should move freely correct ?

It should DEFINITELY move freely.

Try spraying with PB blaster...

Do you think the GUNK solvent will damage the float and other plastic parts ?

I personally have used it without issue in the past... and it works well... but it won't unclog it... in my experience.

I’m not a carb guy but hey it shouldn’t have sat outside until the tank rusted through…

I’ll give it a shot… already showed my neighbor a new OEM carb is $121 on the Jungle site…

Normally a low speed and high speed... but the high speed is much more prone to clogging...

I saw something (one or two spots) that looked like a hole with a brass check ball in it… wonder if that’s what it was? The holes led to the outside of the carb…

You can see what I’m talking about in the 1st and 2nd pic above…under the word Mikuni on the side of the carb…

I'm kinda leaning with @Snoopy11here .... Been many yrs since I've used any carb cleaner, but IIRC I put plastics in with the rest with out probs. Also with snoopy on that stuff has limits, it'll make it look real purdy but getting into those leeetle places you need a set of those things snoopys got, or a good strong blow gun.... or both!

I've been looking at ultrasonic cleaners.  I think it's something I would get a fair amount of use out of, other than carbs.

Berrymans has been my go to for cleaning carbs, but I can't recall doing any with plastic parts.

Have you looked on line just to see if a replacement is available?   Sometimes you get lucky while searching and are able to find an economical replacement…sure makes life easier 😎.

I use only gasoline for soaking, if a passage needs more cleaning, I blast it with a spray can of carburetor cleaner.  You should not use metal brushes to clean jets, scratches will change the flow rate.

Oops… I did use metal brush on outside of carb.

Used a bread tie wire to poke through the tiny holes in the jets…

Is that okay to do ?

Took the carb out of the GUNK solvent and washed it down with dish detergent and rinsed… blowed it dry and shot some carb cleaner everywhere I could find a hole…

had to make some mounting gaskets…

Naw, it ain’t no rod…

Looks like it’s either the centrifugal clutch or the other thing that the chain sprocket is on… because the knocking stops when you gas on it…

also ate up what was a worn out belt to begin with…

More on that later…

This thread is about to turn into a “messing with go cart” thread.

I can’t seem to change the title of this thread.

If a moderator sees this and thinks I need to move it let me know… of course I don’t know how to do that…

Yes... that is perfectly fine. As long as you are careful and take your time. :handgestures-thumbupright:

People warn against using any sort of metal in carbs... but as long as you don't ape-crap on it... and start chewing on the soft materials in the carb... you will be just fine.

I know this thread is titled as a carb issue, and the carb has been cleaned and the go cart is running.

I need to get a belt, so I decided to jump into taking the seat off which is going to have to have new plywood bases made.

Guess I’m gonna learn a little about upholstery…

I know this has veered way of carburetor, but it’s a go cart thread so I figured I would just go ahead and put it all here… so as not to clog up Red Square with another thread that is all over the place.
