Recommended Posts

so i am rebuilding my k181 i had it at a machine shop the crank was grounded down new rings pistion and rod new valves and i was wondering if this is normal for my exhuast valve to stick up this much ? i’m also wondering if the tappets are diffrent like if one is a exhuast and one is intake or are they the same ?

Is this the engine? Intake and exhaust tappets are different

Valve clearance is adjusted by grinding the stems shorter. You can not grind them longer.

As Garry stated above - the tappets are different in length, the valves are the "same". New valves are made with the stems intentionally long to allow grinding to obtain proper stem-to-tappet clearance.

By chance - is the valve open all the time as you rotate the engine?? Does the intake valve open and close as it should??

As Garry said above, the tappets are different. However, the exhaust tappet should be longer in an engine with ACR (automatic compression release). Does it stick up all the time? ACR causes the exhaust valve to open slightly until reaching 600 rpm. Make sure that you are at TDC in the compression cycle. The exhaust valve should be closed and that is where you would check the valve clearance.

(Sorry Bill, we must have been typing our same thoughts at the same time)

The only wat to "lengthen" the valve is to recut the valve seat deeper or cut the sealing face of the valve, or a bit of both.

This service manual has all the information you will need. When adjusting valve lash the cam should not be applying pressure to the lifter.

With ACR The exhaust valve will be open at the beginning of the compression stroke and will close when the piston is about 1/3 of it's way to the top
