Throttle Cable Question

Recommended Posts

1978c81

My 97 520 will not stay at full throttle. The cable will move on its own from full throttle to half throttle. I tried tightening the nut but still no good.  Just want to make sure its the cable as it's not cheap. Thank you. Any ideas?

You'll have to tighten the rivet in the mounting bracket.  Here is the best pic I ahve.  1015474096_520Hcables(5)a.jpg.d3db313abaf0055c0a9e3c36ce65e861.jpg

@1978c81  have this cable assist on all my cables , that combined with a  super lube small tube oil , makes for effortless cable function . small spring light pull on cable to close , is the balance point you want . ever try to push a cable ? as you set it up , verify your  gain or loss . notice perforated spring go to spot  ? thats your pull to lever / linkage point . lots of hours on my set up , worth a try . you want spring to assist closed throttle / choke pete

Some of us have drilled out that rivet and replaced it with a small bolt and nylock nut. Then you can adjust tension...

This works well.

Note that there are a number of washers and spacers in that assembly--be sure to put them back in the same order. Also, put the nut on the side toward the battery so you can easily access both the head and the nut for tension adjustments later on!

Thank you for those who the took the time to respond. I tried at first to compress the rivet with plyers. It didn't help. I ended up putting the throttle side in the vise and it worked well.

For future reference, vise grips work well for this.  You can start with a light bit of pressure, test the throttle, increase pressure if necessary and continue from there.  I can't say for sure on the 520, but I've always been able to tighten mine on the tractor, without removing the cable.
