606, my first WH

I haven't seen many for sale down here in Texas, so I was super excited when I found this 606, having envied all the awesome Wheel Horses I've seen online.  In pretty good shape, mostly complete (I think?).  I've been looking it over, and so far, my main concerns are a no spark situation, as well as what looks like evidence of a thrown rod.  They guy I got it from couldn't figure the spark, and so sold it. Flywheel key was not present, although the JB Weld looks much older than the ignition repairs. Looks like points and condenser were replaced (as was carb) but the armature looks kind of delaminated.  I've got a NOVA II on the way, will knock off the rust and wire it up and see what happens.  Need to get a breaker cover spring before I tie things together.  In the meantime I'll have to replace the shifter boot and check condition of the trans lube.  Other than that she has a sweet patina, with just a spot of rust under the seat.  If I cant rehab the engine, there is a guy down here with an old 10hp Kohler...But for now I'm wanting to keep it stock.  Sure wish I have some attachments though.

Nice find. That seat is original or a good reproduction.  Do you have the belt guard?  WH need the belt guard for the clutching to work properly.  Just an FYI. The tractors require you to come to a full stop to shift gears or the gears will grind. The NOVA II solid state ignition is a good way to go if your tractor has no other electrical systems. 
What evidence is there of a past or current thrown rod?

 

Im just down the road in Marble Falls, Tx.  You snuck that one by me, I usually keep fairly good tabs on WH for sale around here. But I’m glad you got it, I have enough projects!  After you get it running,  I have a few implements I might sell or trade depending on what your looking for.

Thanks Oliver, I'd like to check out your inventory once I get the 606 up and running.  Truth be told it came across state lines, from Oklahoma.  But the guy drove it down to me, heck of a deal.  Here is the JB Weld on the case near where a starter would be.  Notice the little crack seeping oil below it?  I'll patch it again if I can get some spark. I do have the belt guard, but no hardware to fasten it yet.  Also wanting to gease all points, any suggestions?

Jim - Welcome!!

You have a good start there. You have 6 grease fittings on the tractor - both front wheels, both spindle bores, the center axle pivot, and the lower steering block. Two more on the cutting deck (would have been 4, but you are missing the gage wheels and height adjuster mechanism.) Deck looks to be a RM-366. When greasing the axle, raise the front of the tractor off the ground (don't jack it under the center - don't break off the fitting!) and let the wheels hang - this allows the grease to travel both up and down in the spindle bores Use a good chassis grease  - Lucas X-tra Duty green grease is a favorite.

That deck - remove the metal top covers and clean out whatever dried up nasty old stuff is there, grease the spindles with the zerk fitting AND coat the gears with that green anti-sling grease. That is a gear drive deck - the blades need to be timed 90 degrees apart, otherwise, they can collide with each other.

Probably best to drain and refill the Unidrive anyway - raise the front of the tractor off the ground about at foot to allow the oil to get over the hump inside at the bottom. You will need to pull the shifter out to change the boot - easiest to refill thru that hole!

That should get you started - keep on asking questions as you go if needed....

 to the club!  Follow @ri702bill’s lead on lifting the tractor BY THE FRAME to grease the front end and you’re on to a great start!  I’ll add while you’re under there, inspect the inside of the frame plate that bolts to the transmission.  They have been known to crack over the years, usually due to heavy implements. 
 

 If you get that Tecky running, keep in mind that front end is much lighter than Kohler powered models.  If you ask how I know… I have virtually the same machine, a Commando 6.

Pullhosen pony express has, uhm… delivered some out of state fillies to certain undisclosed locations in Michigan in the past…

 to the   Jimmy.              That 606 really looks sweet.   If you can't save the HH60, a  K241 would make it a stock 1056.

It’s Ok 953, the Texas Rangers will turn that posse around at the state line. They know Texas only has a few horses and support our efforts to increase the size of the herd.

    When you change your transmission oil, fill it with diesel or kerosene, drive it around or put it on Jack stands so you can run it in all gears and flush it out.

I may be wrong , but don’t believe that Nova II will work on a motor with a flywheel with more than one magnet

We will see!  I reached out to Rotary where I bout the Nova II and they said it would work.  Got it wired up, hopefully can get the flywheel on tonight.  I never saw the flywheel key and am not sure about the orientation.  I would guess the stepped down part points in towards the cylinder.  Also, drained the gearbox and got it filled with diesel.  Looking forward to checking for spark tomorrow morning!

Got her runnin'!  Super loud, I suppose the muffler is rusted out, although looks ok on the outside.  It's the disc shaped on, may switch to the newer box style. 

Sounds like I need to adjust the carb too.  Will wait until I get a new air filter, the original is pretty dirty, not really starting with it on. 

Stuck with the points instead of Nova, as the recoil starter doesn't appear to be OEM, and I understand points make for an easier start.  With this recoil I have to short pull twice before it will free up to get a full pull to start.

Whoever had this horse before me was missing the Flywheel key, and didn't have the wiring right, so easy fixes for me!  Took her for a spin to work the diesel around the gear box.  Wonder should I fill it up to the shift boot, or just to the threaded fill plug.

Biggest issue now is the belt guard not giving enough slack.  I think I need to slot it forward, and check to see if the tab is in good shape, at the front.

 

Check out how it sounds, does the timing sound ok?
