Onan P216 oil leak

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I have a Wheelhorse 416 H with the Onan P216G and I am leaking oil after mowing. Does not seem to leak sitting at ldle. The oil comes out on right side rear of motor on motor mounting plate. Checked oil drain and filter but it seems to be coming out from under the motor. I also checked oil filler tube and clutch plate mounting , they are dry.Anybody got any ideas?

If the oil filter, filter mount or a sending unit is leaking the cooling air flow will push the oil to the right.  When the engine is off that oil might drain down.  Clean the engine well especially under the bottom using Gunk or Purple Power, then look again.  If it is leaking in the oil filter area, remove the filter and see if the gasket is at fault or if there were two gaskets.  If the filter checks out, look deep inside using a flashlight and mirror.  If a repair is needed in there, pull the engine blower tin (not fun), clean the fins and make the repair.  Hopefully you don’t have cracks anywhere, the engine mounts can crack if the engine gets loose or there was abuse.

Thanks lynnmor, I have had this mower for years and not a problem till now. I pulled the filter and it does not seem to be coming from there or the drain pipe.

I will try cleaning it up better with the pressure washer tomorrow to see if it is coming down or out from under. It looks like it is coming from under.

WHX??

Check where the drain pipe exits the block at the elbow.

Had several  P 220 leaking where the pipe nipple threads in the block.

Thanks WHX, that is where I started. It was loose, so I pulled it out and put a few wraps of teflon tape around it and thought I had it. Went out and mowed for a bit and same problem.

Fine for a temporary test/fix, but eventually the teflon will not be happy with the oil contact and deteriorate.

When you use Teflon tape it acts as a lubricant making it easy for the pipe to tilt down and become loose.  I use a new pipe nipple and run a tap in till it starts cutting, then I install the pipe with red threadlocker after cleaning thoroughly.  New threads will hold better than those that have been loose and wearing from vibration.
