A bunch of us used to give regularly at work - Boston Childrens Hospital used to show up with the Bloodmobile 4 times a year - until Corporate got a tad money hunger and closed our facility, sending everything off to the 4 corners of the globe into Cheap-o-nesia. Their program was called "Half Pints for Half Pints" - great folks there....

Thinking of others and their needs and giving a part of oneself is a indeed an indication of one’s character quality. We all not only benefit from such noble acts but also benefit from personally knowing such people. Thank you Kevin.

You're a good man Charlie Brown!! 10 ... no 15 attaboys.

I, unfortunately cant donate. My dad was dying from leukemia and needed blood every couple days and I couldnt even give! I have high blood pressure and the - several - meds I take (mostly the blood thinner) prevents me from donating, BAH!

Years ago I worked at a place that participated in a blood donation program.  A few of us toolmakers would drive to the donation place, then make a pit stop on the way back for a cold one, talk about a cheap drunk!

We had blood drives at the hospital all the time. They would set up in the conference room and hall outside of the cafeteria. Through the fire door was another hall and the boiler room. Imagine the chaos that ensued one day in the middle of their drive when a hand hole cover blew out on a 100HP Cleaver Brooks boiler with 65 psi of steam! :helmet:

Bravo Kev.           I visited our "Bloodmobile" at work for around 40 years until the heart meds disqualified me.

Mrs.K has the universal type "O".      So she is donating on a regular basis.

Way to go Kevin! Thanks for the reminder to go give blood again too. Sad to say it's been a while. They used to have a frequent blood drive down the road but they stopped for some reason.

Not sure if it's a proven medical fact or not but I used to feel better health wise after regular oil changes when we used to donate more often. I think it's good for the body to make and have new blood. Maybe it was just psychological but either way it doesn't matter.

Thanks for giving Kev. After having AML no one wants mine, but I appreciate all the blood and platelets I received the last few years. Believe me it was a lot. Just got home from Hershey Medical Center for my monthly port flush and blood test. Things still looking good...:handgestures-fingerscrossed:...:handgestures-thumbupright:

Mr. Jay, I’m honored to do a little sitting around for the day and eating cookies, salty snacks and drinking some OJ knowing it could help someone like you!

The main reason I talk about it, to try to remind a few others to go give too :handgestures-thumbupright:

Good on ya, Matey! :greetings-clappingyellow:

I usually go about twice a year, but I also have to watch the blood pressure. :angry-screaming:

If my wife saw me eating something like that in the first post, I'd be on salads for a year.  (exaggerating, but just a bit...)

Type O+, so the Red Cross sends me a lot of email reminders.  I have big protruding veins which makes it easier, and one reason why I give. I have a lot of respect for those who donate who have veins they have to dig for. :tools-hammerdrill:

I'm due to give soon but don't want to do it right before vacation or during prime dehydration season.  Will soon.

Compassion for those who can't give, and especially for those who need it - I'm sure the latter need it more than I do right now.

Used to be able to get a trim and an oil change at the barber shop.    Look good and feel good for $.50.

There used to be a blood donors outfit set up in the carpark at a town near me. I'd call in after work. They've not been there for a long time and I've not heard anything as to where you can donate since.

I donate blood as regular as possible.

Thanks for the generosity and diligence.

My spouse has chaired our community blood program for around 30 years. Originally two drives per year, but due to increased demand they are up to six per year. I was a welcomed donor with plain O+ (without antigens, apparently) from college through until a few years ago when they started asking if you'd been in the UK for more than six weeks in the early 80's (I had, for work). Mad Cow disease, you see. I'm now barred from donating.

I often wonder what the response would be from a patient needing blood to survive who was asked "Look, we have some blood but the donor may have been exposed to Mad Cow disease forty years ago and never showed any symptoms--do you want the blood or do you want to go without?"

My SIL went through roughly 30 units of blood a few years back after hemorrhaging after childbirth.  That’s 3 people’s worth of total blood!  She used the platelet supply of two hospitals.  Similarly, I’m glad there are enough people willing to give what they have to make a difference!
