@Snoopy11  looks like a good project , as you know get a thorough baseline service and verify all your functions , paint and finish comes next , looks like that hood could be too squashed to save . after you gat some time on it , like first oil change time , might try some rislone zink , with the rotella . engines run much easier and smoother with that , oil changes are also like a coal oil flush . good luck with it pete

Looks like it has possibilities.  Most of the damage to the hood looks like folding around the headlight openings.  Straighten those kinks out, and you should be real close to done.

Great advice so far my good people! I appreciate it!

The one thing I will say... the electrical on this tractor is a nightmare. I will probably strip the whole tractor down, throw all the old electrical in the garbage, and custom build from there.

This one is going to be a lot of time and work. Might edge close to your Colossus build there @ebinmaine :teasing-poke:

WELP... I picked up a lot of stuff yesterday... gear oil... wires... a couple cans of primer, fuel filter... spark plug(s) and some other odds and ends. :banana-dance:

Now... it's just finding the time to actually get to the tractor... B)

The only thing I got to do on the tractor yesterday was recheck the points gap... had to mow, take out some dead trees, and work on the golf cart from the morning until after sundown... :crying-yellow:

Personally... I would LOVE if there were 3 or more of me... :romance-grouphug:

For whatever reason... the other community members here on the funny farm do not share my sentiment... :confusion-confused: :sad-pacing:

Don't ask questions, just clone yourself and make sure the clones are all dressed the same as you every day (guess you'll need some more matching WH T-shirts and hats... :laughing-rofl: )  and no more than one is visible to anyone at any given time. :eusa-dance:

Progress and electrical questions...

Things that are going bye-bye... YIKES!!!

I have no clue how to wire this switch, or even how to test it to see if it works...

100_1851.JPG.d43a4ac8d28c4f1b0ea8a062ef8f395d.JPG

Brand new custom made wires... you guys please check out these pictures and tell me if everything looks right!

What the hell is this wire???

100_1854.JPG.23d8ded7cba0af814946421e3ed864d6.JPG

Transmission fluid got changed today... little bit of rust... but no metal materials although... there is a little bit of "other" gunk in it as you can see (I flushed it out very well)...

100_1855.JPG.d2aeeefec291e0edf988d057fcf2ecab.JPG

Now... I haven't looked at the wiring manual yet for the switch OR for the ignition coil. BUT... do you guys know anything about the key switch... particularly for testing purposes... as well as what wires go on the ignition coil terminals? Power goes to one to trigger... but I'm not entirely sure how to wire it...

posts.JPG.b0769fa5b6c7ea5fe47f9124d9154799.JPG

My goal here is to eliminate safety switches, as I don't have PTO or a mowing deck... so I plan for it to be like my other Wheel Horse tractors. I'm going to look at wiring diagrams, but I'd also appreciate any advice you guys can give!

Oh, and I got my throttle and choke cables working @peter lena ...nicely lubed-up! :banana-dance:

Em... no... :snooty:

The term "normal" is one that I somehow find evasive... does anyone here possess it's definition? :scratchead:

I thought not... :D

Nope... I'm not normal... and am becoming cross-eyed to boot! :P

The diagram you found should give you the ability to test the ignition switch with a DVOM.

Yes sir.

What I actually ended up doing was popping the hood on the Ranger... and running a positive wire from the truck battery to the switch... then I just put the negative pin from the multimeter on the battery ground... and starting manipulating the switch in different positions.

Worked sweet... and proved that the switch is fully operational!

Oh yes sir! Without a doubt!

You and the other guys have taught me how to do things the right way over my time here at the forum. Makes me very happy. :banana-dance:

In other news... yesterday... I got a compliment from the female lady women here on the funny farm!!! :banana-wrench:

They said, and I quote, that the 416-8 is a "rusty piece of junk...?" :crying-pink:

I certainly took that as a compliment... I mean... I've heard worse things said... hell... I've been called worse... :laughing-rolling:

So... yesterday... I picked up some more new fuel line... fittings for the fuel tank... and other gadgets I thought I needed.

I already had the motor back on the tractor, and had everything wired in... so I thought I might as well try to get it running before I have to change the motor mounts on the Ranger this weekend.

WELL... I ran into a few issues.

I present exhibit "A"

2022-07-11_1845291024_1.jpg.b191bf6c04d3beb9f7e83faab88be815.jpg

Exhibit "B"

terminal.png.4b51f5a75ef971e4c1e9846b760f0918.png

So... first of all. The passenger side terminal on the front of the starter solenoid DOES NOT go to ground in my rewire. @gwest_ca... you might want to take a look at this. So... in my rewire... I grounded this terminal... and it created some nice white smoke when I tried to start the tractor. Turns out... that terminal gets 12 volts when I go to start the tractor. :confusion-confused:

Ground.jpg.136e4e5acdbfe0af6286448f893e6a7e.jpg

I took the ground OFF that terminal on the starter solenoid and the tractor starts and stops just fine... so... in my case... that terminal was not used at all.

Secondly... after putting the fuel line on and filling up the tractor with fuel... I tested the fuel pump. Works excellently.

I did clean the carb early in the engine rebuild... so I didn't think there would be any issues. I was wrong... the float was stuck in the closed position. SO... a little bit of PB blaster, and the float is working excellently.

I decided to hit the key. Spray of carb cleaner into the intake... crank crank crank... it fired up... just ran like hell.

SO... I adjusted the carb... still ran like hell. I shut it down... and thought... hmm... must be fueling. I retested the fuel pump... NOPE... that works great. Pulled the carb, recleaned it... everything looked sweet.

I pulled the spark plug to see if there was spark... THEN I noticed the problem. I noticed that the ground electrode on the spark plug was pushed against the center electrode. Hmm... I know I bought the right plug. :eusa-think: I pulled out another spark plug from the stock drawer and I noticed 1 difference... the first plug did not have a gasket! It was missing in action. SO... I put a plug in that actually had a gasket... and BOOM SHACKA LACKA! It purrrrrrs.... no issues.

So... now it is just getting the right belt... a battery... and getting everything back together...

Guess what hauled the garbage down to the curb today?

If you guessed the 416-8... you win a plate of chili-cheese fries...

It runs good... my only gripe is that the belt seems REALLY loose in the pulley system... so... I'm not sure if the PO put the wrong belt on it... or removed an idler pulley somewhere... but I don't like how loose the belt is. Any advice is welcome!!!

Yes @davem1111... for now I am running the 6 sided belt... 'till I can get out to tractor supply...

I don't know if changing the belt will solve the "loosness" problem... but unless you guys give some other advice, I will probably try changing that first.

Do you still have the side guard off, and have any pictures or video?

The easiest solution (but maybe not the "right" one) would probably be to take that belt off, measure it carefully or take it with you to TS, and buy one that's an inch (or two) shorter and see if that works better.  Or as some might suggest, buy several and return the ones that don't fit.  But also, check the idler tension spring - I think on the 8-speeds it's the spring from the clutch mechanism back to the small hole in the "tab" on top of the left axle. If I remember correctly, I noticed that the spring on that tractor had been replaced, or had lost some of its tension, and was pulled back farther to the "L" down member on the frame where the trans attaches.

Glad you got that old clunker running!  That's totally awesome!  :banana-wrench::greetings-clappingyellow:

NOPE! I can get some pictures later though.

I know what you are talking about regarding the spring... it is not a stock spring. My best guess is that it is one from a hardware store...

Of course, that doesn't help with the tension problem... 'cause that clutch pedal is coming all the way back to me...

It is loose enough to make me wonder if I am missing an idler pulley... :scratchead:

I know the 800 Special has 2 idler pulleys... one on the clutch shaft, one fixed to the frame. I'm thinking it is just a belt problem... but I'm not opposed to adding another idler some time in the future.

My other... eh... question... is... this tractor takes a 5/8 belt.... correct? :confusion-confused:

There should be:  PTO pulley, drive pulley on trans, and a grooved (not flat) idler pulley, and the belt (yes, 5/8") goes around the outside of all 3.  Doesn't that tractor have the idler? I thought I remembered seeing one....

It has the grooved idler, yes sir.

I just wondered if it had an extra flat idler. Since the answer is no... it all goes back to the belt...

I suppose you could add a flat idler somewhere - it wouldn't need to be spring-loaded. But getting a belt that fits is much easier. B)

I picked up a 5/8 by 82 inch belt today. Runs totally awesome... enough to 'make me a believer' ...kinda this tractor's anthem you might say...
