I must have forgotten to tighten the spark plug,  it popped out while mowing. Of course it pulled the threads.  Can it be helicoiled with out taking the head off? Or look for a good used one ?

Do a helicon look with the head in place runs a huge rush of metal shavings in the cylinder. Helicoils definitely work.  Pull the head, do the helicoil, decarbon the cylinder and check the valve clearance. Your major maintenance is done for a while

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Have to agree here. Pull the head. Very simple on a flat head.

There is an old mechanics trick of getting a powerful Shop-Vac and putting it on leaf blow setting and taping that to the exhaust. It's been known to work but where these things are so simple I just wouldn't do it. Pull the head. 10 bolts. It's done.

Ok thanks. I’ve looked on eBay for a head one for 213.00  and one for 284.00.  Are these rare and obsolete?

They're not the same as any other Kohler Engine head because they have 10 bolts which is more than the rest.

I wouldn't touch one of those for anything like $213 much less $284. Right place and right time you can get a whole engine for a 300, 400.

You really, really dont need a head!! Just get a helicoil set and pull your head, its really, really simple -- and WAY cheaper that those prices!

A helicoil set and head gasket should be less than $30 on the bay.....

You can remove the head without much else but while it's off is a good time to check valve clearances and clean out the carb a bit.

When you get finished up and have run the engine for the first time remember to retorque the head bolts in the same sequence.

My C165 has had a helicoil in the sparkplug for twenty-five years years and it's still going strong.
