drewd 55 #1 Posted July 5, 2022 Hi All, I have a 1971 (or 72) Work Horse with the old style mule drive. I rebuilt a newer 36" RD deck that I use with my 1987 416 and on the Work Horse. The Work Horse seems to work harder with the deck and is a bit noisy. Decided it's time to repack or replace the bearings in the mule drive (everything on the deck is quite). The bolts holding the pulleys are in great shape and not deformed at all but they did not fit tight into the bearings. There was some slop in both pulleys yet the bolts and bearings inner rim were not deformed. I saw no trace of a bushing and the parts diagram does not show any just the bolts and spacers. So appears they were designed this way. I have used this Work Horse for years and am the 2nd owner. Still friends with the son of the Original owner so pretty sure all parts are original to the tractor. The manual lists the bearing as # 4567 for both the flat idler and the v pulleys. The actual bearings are marked Genbearco on the rubber seal & GB 22207 stamped in the collar. When I looked up this number on the web I came up with NOS for $70+! Is this the going rate for these or are generic bearings available? Also, it appears you have to press them out of the pulleys by pushing on the middle of the bearing thereby damaging the bearing. Or is there a way? Finally, I was thinking of attempting to pick off the rubber seal with the bearings still in the pulleys and cleaning and repacking. What do you guys think?? Dumb? or doable? Thanks All for any thoughts or suggestions!
peter lena 8,877 #2 Posted July 5, 2022 @drewd , perfect opportunity ! glairing at you is your answer, to doing a grease repack ! small flat pocket screwdriver ,carefully remove the side shields , wipe out bearing grease , flush with carb cleaner , repack to same amount with LUCAS X-TRA HEAVY DUTY GREASE , green and white tube . 560 deg temp rated , anti sling , recovering . done this on all my related mower decks and mule drive bearings , no whining noise and no failures , also feel and sense the operational ease of your drive set up , also re grease , the needle bearing onside your PTO drive cone . same wipe out ,and light refill , when ever I replace a bearing , always look for the wide side shields , so you can put in a grease thats made for heat / loading , the difference is really dramatic , with ease and function . also lubricate any and all related linkage / lever areas , it should all work , with a smooth /solid / ease , pete
drewd 55 #3 Posted July 5, 2022 @peter lena, thanks, I'll attempt to clean and repack these for now as they seem decent. Also, do not think I can get these out without risking damage. Once I'm sure I have new ones at a decent price I'll replace if needed. I used Lucas Red N Tacky on my deck rebuild but will give the X-TRA Heavy Duty a go with these as you suggest. This tractor has the eclectic PTO clutch. Thanks, Drew
