Kohler K341 knocking under load

Recommended Posts

IthacaJeff

Hi all:

I've got a newly acquired and beat up 416-8 with a Kohler K341 16hp engine.

After replacing the cylinder head and testing it out with an hour of easy mowing,

I took the tractor to a piece of land to do a bit of brush hogging. For about 15-20

minutes it worked great. . . the tall grass was no match for it.

Then it starting bogging down some, so I went to a lower gear. . . but after a bit

it started bogging down under load some more, and then started a nasty knock

or rattle. I powered down and took the tractor home. After getting it home I started

it up again and mowed for about 20 minutes with no knock or problems.

The tractor is missing the engine sheet metal that covers the head. . .I'm guessing

this helps run air over the head cooling fins. Could this be part of the problem?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jeff in Ithaca

I would tend to agree with your hypothesis. Air cooled engines are carefully designed to get air to all the right spots.

Best of luck
