Jennifer 1,877 #1 Posted July 4, 2022 (edited) Husband wanted me to ask everyone for some advice! Today he took our daughter to a test and tune pull off! They both were having a great time! The tractor was doing very well from what I was told but during one of her pulls she heard a noise in the tractor and never mentioned it till after her dad hooked on! Her father went back to look through the videos that he was taking and in fact could hear some popping! However he had already hook on and went to takeoff before he watched video. There was quite a bit of noise I guess and the right side rear would no longer help turn.. they unhooked and the tractor drove of the track. He was advised to jack it up and see if axle broke! I helped my husband jack it in the air and run it. Both wheels would turn but the side in question could be stopped by hand.. also nothing in low side would happen…. Is this a pen/key that can be replaced or 😬😬😬😬 worst news? All the help from the great wheel horse gurus is much needed…. Daddy and daughter need the bonding time….. The video at 22 sec. you can hear and see the tractor buck… IMG_5675.MOV Edited July 4, 2022 by Jennifer 4 7
ebinmaine 67,484 #2 Posted July 4, 2022 The tractor appears to be a 1973 10 HP 8 speed. I don't believe these were originally built with Limited Slip Differentials.... ((??)) @stevasaurus What did you use for a transmission? Any modifications? Locked differential? Flipped pinions? Welded gears? (I REALLY hope not) If it's an "open diff" transmission it's perfectly normal for each wheel to spin independent of one another. You could get the whole rear off the ground and listen for crunchy crackly noises. Remove both wheels. Carefully check the hubs. See if the keys, hub or axle keyways or even a set screw is damaged or broken. If nothing is found on the outside, the only accurate way to find the problem is to pop open the transmission. Easy stuff with basic hand tools. Take more pics during disassembly... Keep us posted and keep asking questions! 2
Pullstart 62,852 #3 Posted July 4, 2022 I hear the crunch at :22 and am surprised that IF that was the damage being done, that it kept going. As EB mentioned, try inspecting all keys outside before opening it up. There’s the input shaft keyway, hub keys, etc. My concern is how you said nothing in low side will happen. You have zero low range? That would almost have to indicate internal damage… 1
stevasaurus 22,738 #4 Posted July 4, 2022 If that horse is a 1973 10-8 with the factory transmission, it has the #5086. A quick check is to find out if it has 1" axles. If 1" axles, it is a 4 pinion differential. Like was said above, check all 3 keyways. If the keys are good, I suspect the high/low range has a gear with teeth missing or broken. Anyway, it is fixable with a little love. This is the #5091, only difference 1 1/8" axles and 8 pinion differential. Let us know Jennifer.
Jennifer 1,877 #5 Posted July 4, 2022 @stevasaurus today’s the fourth so we’re not gonna spend a lot of time on the tractor we’re going to have some family quality time celebrating the freedoms that we take for granted every day I remember those that sacrificed the ultimate for our freedom but I did take a quick measurement of the axle! @ebinmaine we truly know nothing about this tractor other than what I was told and the one that sold it to me was able to give us the name and some pictures of the creator pulling it…. With that said until we get a hold of this person and talk to him about what all modifications were done we are in the dark here…we did nothing but bought it! 🤪. It just seemed like the thing to do! Lol.. We appreciate all the advice from all the Wheel Horse gurus hopefully we can get this tractor up and going again for the pulls that are coming up! Thanks again and happy Fourth of July! Happy Independence Day everyone! God bless the USA! 1 1

The low and high lever won’t move! 😬 Jennifer, For a old Wheel Horse trick fill the transmission up with kerosine down the shifter hole and let it a few days. Then try rocking the input shaft and axles back and forth but do not force any of the shafts. Then try moving the Hi/Low shifter while tapping lightly with a hammer the shifter at the base. Push come to shove ....... heat around the base of the Hi/Low shifter with a propane torch then wrap ice cubes around the base of the shifter. The ice will shrink the steel rod in the cast housing and let the shifter move. The clearance is very tight, and rust will build up locking the shaft. Jennifer 1,877 #9 Posted July 9, 2022 Husband is getting frustrated!!!! Can’t get the hubs off ether transmission! Also wants to know if someone could identify each transmission.

Jennifer 1,877 #11 Posted July 9, 2022 Also anyone have this rod that connects to the brake band…? Nut about off and then broke the shaft off instead..

ebinmaine 67,484 #13 Posted July 9, 2022 Just now, Jennifer said: His three arm pulley puller! Then tried a block of 2x4 to hit close to the shaft…🤷🏻♀️ WHOA. WHOA. WHOA. Both of those are VERY bad for a Wheelhorse transmission. You NEED a good puller to be successful removing Wheelhorse hubs. Go through the thread I've pasted here: There are some great puller ideas. It's also extremely important to remember the rust took 4 or 5 decades to form. It won't disappear in 10 minutes. I've had hubs under constant pressure take 2 WEEKS to pop off. Heat. GOOD penetrating oil. (NOT PB or WD regular formula). Patience. Time. More patience.... 2 1

Transmission is out of tractor now and I guess hubs are going to slow the progress to the inside issue!
Jennifer 1,877 #15 Posted July 18, 2022 Problem found!!! On the way back to repair!!! Couldn’t get hubs off shaft ended up coming out…. That was a plus really! Was able to put in a press!

ebinmaine 67,484 #18 Posted July 18, 2022 This is where the 8 speed has the advantage over a 4. Twice as many pinion gears. Hopefully the new one will be better. 1 1

Jennifer 1,877 #23 Posted July 25, 2022 (edited) Well it was a pretty good day for the daughter! Not so much for the husband…. Trying to get videos from Grandma and friends! Daughter got 2nd place! Pulling 234.94. Husband didn’t place…. Apparently he was leaning back and the seat came unlatched… causing him to fall back and off the pedal…😬. He was pretty happy with the transmission holding up! Guess he had little faith in his repair job! 🤷🏻♀️ They had a great time and that’s what matters! There moving towards more pulling at some distance just to get as many in as they can! Thinking of traveling to Kansas in a few weeks…. 🤦♀️ Edited July 25, 2022 by Jennifer 2
Jennifer 1,877 #24 Posted August 14, 2022 (edited) Well a long day! The kids where are it again! Yes even the big kid I married! 😂…. We drove around 2 1/2 hours for the kids to pull again today! It was super hot out but all had a blast even the daughter that didn’t place today but was a good sport after threatening her dad a little… lol. We are in need of more weights lol… so that’s on the list now! Her dad out weighed her! IMG_8381.MOV Edited August 14, 2022 by Jennifer
