WHwest8597 85 #1 Posted July 2, 2022 What cleaner does everyone use when tearing down a deck for a rebuild?
8ntruck 7,217 #2 Posted July 2, 2022 I'd start with my pressure washer. Elbow grease, wire brush, various solvents for oil/grease removal, soap, water will all come in handy. Penetrating oil will also be needed to help loosen stubborn fasteners. Good luck.

BearPro 12 #4 Posted July 8, 2022 (edited) If you can find it, get some stuff called "Challenger" it's a water based de-greaser and it's the best stuff I have ever used. I once had some fluorescent light fixtures I was trying to clean up, (they are always black right under the tubes) I tried everything on these, even lacquer thinner nothing worked, I was going to repaint them. Then I thought what the hell let's try the Challenger on them, even though it's not really made for it. The stuff was amazing, as soon I sprayed some of it on, it removed all that black crap from under the bulbs, and I didn't have to re-paint. It's also great stuff to prep aluminum with, before TIG welding. My friend keeps a spray bottle of the stuff right next to his welder. He told me that it works better than anything else he had used. If only I could get Project Farm on Youtube to test the stuff 'cause I'm sure nothing else would come close to what this stuff does. peter lena 8,933 #6 Posted July 8, 2022 @WHwest8597 use the sun to also help you out , after cleaning out the original grunge , typically do a aerosol penetrating oil soak down , to lubricate , / saturate and bake into that neglected metal , that also enhances the ability to clean out more grunge , does the deck have deflectors on it ? probably packed with rotting grass , I personally removed the flat lower shield , to clean out and dry that spot , the deck supported on a 45 deg angle to the sun , will transform , with hot sun and oil soak . thats all I use on mine , realize this is totally off the norm , for deck prep , but none of my decks have any rot or rust on them , also do a total bearing lubrication related change out , to deck spindles and related mule drive bearings , no noise or bearing failures . just some ideas , pete
