RM-366 / 875 belt tension

There seems to be a lot of extra play in the #1577 belt going from engine to deck…is this normal? I’ve only mowed with her once and started noticing some slippage occurring if I encountered some taller grass areas (to the point where the belt/blades would almost stop spinning but the engine would still be going). Pretty sure it’s the right belt on there, though it’s the one belt I did not replace when I got this a few months back (new one will be here tomorrow). Thoughts?

That does look like it is not the right belt.  I'm thinking it should be a 29".  Don't quote me on this yet, as I have not found my notes, but 29" sounds rights.  One inch either way does not work. :occasion-xmas:

@stevasaurus, the #1577 is a 28” belt. This one says L428 on it, which is a 1/2”x28” belt.  I’ve seen the #1577 listed as a “4L280k” belt, which is what I’ve got coming tomorrow.

As far as I know, there’s no way to tighten the tension…the manual says the spring for the clutch pedal brings it to the proper tension.

The sides of that belt look extremely worn to me and it is riding very deep in the pulleys. This effectively lengthens the belt as the belt falls farther into the grooves, perhaps by an inch or more, and means there is less friction between the sides of the pulley and the sides of the belt. Belts do not stretch, of course.

Let us know how the new one works.

The fraying on the side of the belt tells me your pullies need an alignment check. Plus there is belt fuzz on your engine block. Tractor drive belt doesn't look great either.

Look at the pulley pivot point, can't quite see, but looks to broken.

@squonkI figured belt fuzz was from 'breaking in' a new belt, which the drive belt is (still learning new things, apparently). The parking brake pulley has worn 2 grooves in the top of the 8005 drive belt, is that normal (pics below)? Drive belt was from Off Road Belts, listed as 'Toro/Wheel Horse 8005 Aramid Belt Replacement'.

But I would agree that the pulleys seem out of alignment (at least with the deck and engine). The pivoting/clutch pulley (not broken BTW, that was just a crappy hairpin in the pic that didn't fit...replacing it with a straight pin) flares outwards at an angle from the engine/body when the pedal is disengaged/deck is spinning (when the clutch pulley is furthest away from the engine pulley).  As I engage the pedal (moving the clutch pulley closer to the engine pulley), the clutch pulley shifts closer to the engine/body. I take that to mean there's an offset between deck and engine pulley, but I'm not sure how to address that.

You need new belts, a new drive belt tensioner pulley and shims to align the pto pulley.

Badly. Kinda amazed it runs and mows at all!

With the belts off, check all the "V" pulleys inner surfaces and inner edges for roughness.
