clevis hitch with trailer ball

Recommended Posts

I think I have seen the answer/post before but am having trouble finding it... My dad wants to keep the clevis hitch on his 414 but he wants to be able to move the trailer he has that takes a 2.25 or whatever it is. He cant use the trailer hitch receiver with the clevis because it seems it will affect the motion of the clevis hitch when he uses the plow and all that.

Is there some sort of trailer ball adapter that can essentially be inserted onto the clevis hitch and then taken off when not in use?

That would be a 2-5/16" ball.  A ball installed on hitch that is lifted with a cable will have the trailer tongue weight hanging on that cable, only a VERY light weight trailer should be considered.  It only takes a minute to remove a clevis hitch.

These are available on line.  Pins onto the clevis hitch just like a plow, etc.   I use them on my clevis hitches.

They Can be found a Little Less expensive Here http://www.xtrememotorworks.com/Receiver Hitches.html

Because he Xtreme actually Builds them which CCS sells  Then Johnny Products make a few attachments that will fit On the Clevis Hitch as well https://www.johnnyproducts.com/SleeveHitchAccessories.htm

Such as the 4X Multi Suitcase weight Pinned weight receiver & Sleeve to 2in Receiver Hitch and finally the Multi Tongue Hitch

Why not use the drawbar hitch (came standard) in conjunction with the clevis? I bored the tongue out from 1/2 to 3/4 on mine and put a ball on it, but it won't interfere with Clevis operation.

The pic below isn't mine, but shows how they can mount together.

I'm thinking a trailer that uses a 2-5/16 ball tongue weight may be a bit hefty for the cable, proceed with caution :eusa-think:.

over time that standard bar was bent from the trailer, which was just a 6x10' or around that size

Yeah I know the clevis hitch would be easy to remove, but getting the hitch receiver from wheelhorsepartsandmore.com would get in the way of the functionality of the clevis hitch.

And as I responded before that standard bar was bent pulling around an empty 6x10' trailer

I made a riser for the ball and added a link to the top transmission bolt to take much of the weight.

That wont work without some sort of riser for the ball....trust me.  Tailor ball is to low and tailor tongue is interfered with by the clevis hitch.  The adapter keeps it simple, just pop it on the clevis hitch when you need a ball or pin hitch.

There ya go!

I typically add a wider "foot" to the end of the drawbar (like a 3 inch square of 1/4 plate) that pushes up on the underside of the tranny case. If you ever drop a heavy load into the hitch it will spread the load instead of busting the bottom out of the transmission. I've seen several broken that way.

That single point of contact pushing up from the bottom is a real risk, good idea to spread the load.  As you can see, I elected to hang weight on the top bolt and it has worked well despite towing way too much weight.

So what kind of trailer does he want to move?

Something doesn’t sound right. I moved an empty 18 foot car hauler around with the standard hitch and no damage was done.

I have heard that kind of story for years, but I have bent them down easily.

May depend on the terrain you're pulling the trailer over, smooth pavement may be easier than rough not so smooth turf.
