Which spindle bearing?

Recommended Posts

lynhill

I recently purchased a 10 hp (108?).  It didn’t have a deck but found a 4’ deck that works on it.  I don’t know that I would want to cut thick 6” grass with it often, but it works great for the ditches and roadside.  The only number I can read is on the tag and it appears to be 5902090.  I don’t think this is the model number, but the serial number. The housing is broke where the lock ring attaches at the bottom. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

There two types of spindles to fit the 48" deck... (excluding the much older 'Double-D' type (60s- early 70s).

One of those later models uses A KEYWAY on the TOP pulleys and the TOP shaft is 3/4" dia.  The other type does NOT use the keyway and is smaller at 5/8" dia shaft on top (still 3/4" at the blade end).  I have ONE spindle that MAY suit your needs...it does NOT use the Keyway mentioned meaning that the TOP shaft dia is 5/8"...  It would be spindle assembly  110172 or 111726...same spindle, just a number changed.  It has some corrosion on it...not bad or detrimental though...as all four mounting threads are in tact.  $95 shipped.

The spindles that doesnt use a key way suck I think. Removing the pully from one thats been on a while is almost impossible without damaging the pully. Havent had one yet that pops right off.

2 tricks that work: FIRST:1)remove the blade(s), (2)set spindle housing in the hollow of a cement block...for balance, set another block on the opposite side of deck (3) remove grease zerk (4) back off top nut to be LEVEL with top of shaft...don't remove it (5) hold the flat of a BRASS hammer onto the TOP of the shaft/nut (6) with a BFH, ...and no shyness...WHACK the brass hammer to break the pulley loose...the shaft will drop only  3/8-1/2 inch.

SECOND: Soak the pulley with penetrant for a while (1) remove blade to access the lower spindle NUT. (2)back off top NUT a couple turns. (3) hold LOWER nut with wrench (4) Use a STRAP wrench on the rim of the pulley...OR...VICE GRIPS on the pulley HUB (may mar outer edge of hub). (5) twist pulley left/right till it breaks free.  ALETERNATIVE: Hold pulley with STRAP wrench and turn bottom nut with an IMPACT WRENCH & SOCKET to fit the nut.
