42 SD Baffles

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I just stripped down a 42 SD deck to rebuild spindles and paint.  The deck came with a beat up 416-8 that I bought a few years ago.  Fixed up the 416 for my camp and use a nice 36 RD deck on it that I also rebuilt.  Now I want to rebuild the 42SD to use at home.

I have two questions;

  • 1) one wing of the baffle is missing.  Should I make a new one or simply remove the baffle.  In reading several threads I see many do not want the baffles but not sure if that applies to the 42SD or just the 42RD.  Any thoughts??
  • 2) want to run this deck on a 1971 Workhorse 800 (repowered with 10hp).  Would the 10hp run the 42 SD deck?

Thanks as always!

That 10 should run it just fine.

My 2 cents on the baffles is to reinstall. I think the side winders cut better with those in place.

@drewd on those baffles , personally don't like them , unless they are regularly maintained / cleaned out , only have r/d decks with no baffles . depending on your grass set up , if the deck holds grass , it should be cleaned out , and lubricated in the sun dry out . btw , what kind of grease are you using in those spindle bearings ? lucas extra h/d chassis grease , in those bearings , will not fail or whine with noise . also convert the same mule  bearings over to this . for quiet running . converted over all my related mower decks and drives over to hi temp grease . no noise or failures . just some input , pete

Just starting to rebuild this deck.  Have not used as yet but these baffles are quite simple (unlike the 36" deck) so not horrible to clean.   I read in the forums that many don't worry about baffles with the RD decks but not sure if needed on the SD decks.

I do use Lucas red and tacky on my 36" deck and will on this one as well.  Thanks for the tip on the mule drive will clean and switch to Lucas as well.

@drewd that bearing grease change out , really is not difficult , you would have 8 bearings in total to do , 6 on the deck 2 on the mule, probably all the same 6203 ( 3/4 ) bore . when you use that hi temp x tra hd , the operational running difference is just effortless and no noise . I use pocket screwdriver , on bearing seal, wipe out and flush with carb cleaner , then repack with same amount. once you do it you are hooked on how quiet they run .  also do this on my deck rustproofing , good going , pete

side winders have the baffes behind the blades to guide the grass out the chute. If you take them out a lot of grass will go out the back and not the chute.

Thanks, most of mine is still there and in good shape just need to fabricate the missing piece and weld it in.  Thanks again!

Thanks Pete!  I do use Lucas Red & Tacky on my 36 RD when I rebuilt that deck.  Also, the 36 has been soaking in the sun since yesterday noon!  Good point on the mule drive.  Will replace bearings on that at the same time.  Thanks!

@drewd   also get some hi temp grease in the pto outer cone NEEDLE BEARING , that way every related bearing is getting hi temp protection . did that on all my set ups , the difference in running / operational ease , is really an amazing difference. I  also went to the lucas x-tra hd chassis grease , no noise or bearing issues at all . detail lube and firm up the pto lever linkage . making it solid and smooth , added washers next to battery side frame start , 3/8" and grease , no more sloppy linkage start . stay at it . pete
