1975 C-160

Mike'sHorseBarn

Dug this out of the guys shed tonight for my final haul. This one is one that I'm keeping as I've always wanted a C-160. Biggest problem is that the transmission is shot and he told me that up front so I have to tear it off and have it rebuilt or find a new rear end. I would have ruined it anyway since the release valve was absolutely seized tight and I had to get it on the trailer so I had to tow it. I think a tractor like this is worth putting the money into. I guess I'll be on the lookout at the big show for hyro rear end options.

Me myself would verify that it really is bad rather than take the po word for it.

Absolutely agreed.

Excellent find there Mike !!

Looks like a very good start.

My own Automatic is a 75.

My tow valve is stuck as well. The tractor will move a few inches and stop until the pressure subsides.

@daveoman1966 is the auto man.

What EXACTLY is "wrong"  with it?

I've heard of tractors "needing  a transmission"  because the ignition points were bad.

Does it run?

I'm not so sure that's true on a Sundstrand transmission.

Did the rear tires drag or spin?

This one doesn't run yet, it was sitting in a shed for 15 years  covered in junk until I got it. Previous owner said he bought it from a john deere dealer and brought it home. Once the trans got hot it would quit moving so he parked it and forgot about it. That's why I'm thinking it's actually the trans.

Your comment :  "Once the trans got hot it would quit moving" is  typical of a Sundstrand that needs rebuild...both the PUMP and the HYD MOTOR.   The soft brass internal components (of the pump AND the hyd motor) are scratched or scored and need refinished.  When operating temp is reached, oil slips thru these scratches/scorings resulting in loss of oil pressure...leading to loss of power or no motion at all. I have posted here...on RS... a .pdf file instructing what and how to do this rebuild.  It is NOT difficult at all...just meticulous care is needed. Here is the file:

Either L J FLUID products :  https://l-j-fluid-power.hub.biz/

OR

B J HYDRAULICS.  https://bjhydraulics.com/

Be sure to specify parts ---Gasket & O-ring Kit---- for a Sundstrand Model 90-1140 (Same as 90-1136, 1137)
