Tightening Up A Steering Sector (Fan Gear)

The 704 that I am working on has a lot of slop in the steering. Among other things, I have found that the fan gear rotates a bit on the lower shaft. This fan gear is fixed to the shaft with two roll pins, one is 1/4" with a smaller pin inside of it. Both pins are in good condition, so I assume that the hole in the shaft is slightly out of round, allowing for the movement. 

 

 

What is the recommended fix for this? Should I have the gear welded to the shaft or would I be better off putting a bolt through the gear and torquing it down?

Neither - Try a coiled (aka Spirol) pin first - If the hole(s) are so wallowed out, go up to 5/16". Spiral wound pins cover a wider range of hole size than a split pin and have at least 2X the radial holding power. They work.

Nothing appears wallowed. Does the larger pin still require a smaller pin inside it?

Service bulletin. I did this on my 704. Worked great and easy to do. did the fan gear and both spindles. @rjg854 just did his 1045

I have welded those and used a stainless steel welding rod. Worked real good.

But it sounds like Mike has the best fix.

I dunno, I'm about ready to weld mine. The draw back to welding them is that the fan has to be removed from the shaft to remove the assembly from the tractor.

 

On the other hand, the only reason I have ever found to disassemble said assembly is to remove it from the tractor, and the only reason I have ever found for that is to work on it when it gets sloppy.

i removed my lower shaft and fan by taking the four bolts out that mount the engine and sliding the engine forward. Hardest part was taking the steering wheel shaft out. The collar was pretty stuck after 58 years. After removing the shaft, the rest was easy.

That may well be possible. I had issues getting things to clear the frame, and at the time engine removal of any degree was a bit more effort than I was willing to put into the job.

I was already doing a full frame-off refresh due to a cracked F plate and numerous other issues. I had the frame on the lift table upside down and a simple twist of the sector gear and in it went. I'd also added a front bearing for the lower steering shaft since it was right there and easy to do.
