Maxwell-8 4,277 #1 Posted June 7, 2022 (edited) I have this Kohler M16. sweet runner, right on 160psi of compression. It makes AC, but doesn't make DC. That means a bad voltage regulator no? Which one do I need? And can it be my cheapest source asks 150$ for one? Is there pure gold inside them? Edited June 7, 2022 by Maxwell-

With the ignition switch ON and not running do you have 12 volts DC on the center terminal? If you don't have the 12 volts the regulator won't work. Regulator/rectifier diagnostics - First do you have 30+ volts AC from the stator? If yes, then. 1 - Do you have battery voltage to the center or lower terminal of the reg/rec with the key in the "ON" position? 2 - Does the body of your reg/rec have a proper ground? if the above answers are yes then the reg/rec needs to be replaced. 3 hours ago, Maxwell-8 said: And can it be my cheapest source asks 150$ for one? Thanks a lot for the info Edited June 8, 2022 by Maxwell-8
ranger 1,750 #5 Posted June 8, 2022 (edited) I bought one of the ‘cheepo’ ones off ‘the bay’, for my Raider 10. I am going to mill the fins down and a computer cpu heat sink, clamping the two together using the regulator mounting holes, + thermal grease between. This because these reg’s are meant to be in a forced airflow. Only costs a few £’s, so not much lost if it doesn’t work. (Pics to follow). Doug. pics as promised. Good point, @Maxwell-8 if you current regulator does not mount in a hole in the engine tins then you will want one like this. https://www.amazon.com/DB-Electrical-AKH6000-Rectifier-Regulator/dp/B019DHPMAS/ref=asc_df_B019DHPMAS/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167148561991&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11992277148849675379&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1028057&hvtargid=pla-307268367982&psc=1 This style is made to be remote mounted. 1
peter lena 8,634 #7 Posted June 8, 2022 @Maxwell-8 another often overlooked / related , detail is GROUNDING . have any alligator clip test wires? , go from battery cable ground ,bolt down point , to intended rectifier mounting point , test gain or improvement . if it helps , what I do is add another cable , from battery ground point to engine corner / frame , clutch pedal side , and 10-12 ga wire form there to engine tins , rectifier bolt down point , from there to head lights , increased , verified grounding . my initial results was so solid , did the same thing to my other 2 horses , amperage gauge works like it should , just an idea , pete
