310-8 PTO belt Slipping

Recommended Posts

Harpkatt

Recently purchased a 310-8 w 42 deck, as bought everything worked but needed some help. the PTO belt to the mower deck barely existed,it was worn and tattered but it still cut. I needed to replace a spindle assembly and purchased a new belt at the same time. I installed the new belt and now the belt slips the second it touches the grass. I purchased the belt from a local agway but it definely isn't the best available. It's a little shorter than I believe it should be 100 inches in think it was. it is enough to allow me to use the idle pulley/tensioner,but no matter how I adjust it it slips. Do I simple need the longer belt? What other issue could this be?

:text-welcomeconfetti:to the forum.  Plenty of help here.

The belt you replaced is the one on the deck driving the spindles, or the one between the PTO and the deck?

If it is the one between the PTO and deck, are you sure it is the belt that is slipping?  It could be the PTO clutch that is slipping.  Belt slipping goes down a different diagnostic path than slipping clutch does.

Just to be sure, the belt driving the deck should be in the large diameter pulley groove on the PTO.

Good luck.

The belt that is slipping is between the PTO and the deck. The PTO worked fine before I changed the belt,so I doubt it is the PTO clutch. I definitively have it in the wrong pulley if it's intended for the larger one. Any thoughts on what sized belt I would need to use the larger pulley? do the Two pulleys have different profiles? If so that could explain why the belt is slipping. I believe I recall it visually slipping.

I see Garry has you covered on the belt needed.   :handgestures-thumbupright:     Once you get the correct length belt in place and the belt on the larger pulley of the PTO you should tighten the Mule Drive (counterclockwise) and then check the tension again after the first mowing.

Yes, get the correct belt and install it on the correct pulley, then tension it as shown in the manual.  Adjust the PTO clutch so that it won't slip, a slipping clutch can cause the belt to slip as the speed slows.

@Harpkatt   look up lubricating the needle bearing in that belt drive cone , carefully wipe out existing grease , use a small amount of  hi temp lucas  chassis grease  , x tra heavy duty , 560 temp rated anti sling , just enough to lightly cover bearing , excess will get on clutch, avoid that . that bearing will now work as it should transferring that drive stress , much easier , lubricate all related , rusty areas , so it moves with ease , pete

Belt drive cone? Is this part of the PTO or the idle pulley?

That is the part of the PTO with the pulley grooves.  Also sometimes called the PTO bell.

@Harpkatt  , sorry about the incorrect name I  referred you to , most important about that service , thanks @8ntruck  for  correct  name   that its part of the  pto belt drive system . often have people refer to a single trouble spot, when every one of these set ups has to function completely at every area  , those bearings get quite hot , found if you service them all , with hi temp grease , the spin up and drive ease is very apparent . also forget , about being new at this , as you get familiar  with repairs you will , fit right in . pete
