Bluebird at the back door

I've got this bluebird that's been hanging out on the storm door, can't figure out why he's been there for 2 days now. I'm not sure if he's after his reflection or maybe bugs but it doesn't seem like the bugs would be there that long, so that  he'd been there for this amount of time.

Bluebirds are strange creatures. We have bluebird boxes and for year we had lots of beautiful bluebirds. But this year, despite all of my efforts, house sparrow have run them out and taken over the boxes. I don't know why your bluebird is hanging around, but my neighbor behind me has a Baltimore Oriole that sits on her window sill tapping on the glass all day long. You can't figure out nature no matter how you try.

Bizzare Randy... we used to have alot of them but like Bob them nasty house wrens chased them out. Ton of Orioles tho.

I've got the same problem with sparrows taking over the bluebird boxes also. I don't know why they don't stand their ground . I've even tried changing locations of the boxes but that doesn't seem to deter the other birds.

The behavior of that bluebird is certainly very bizarre. As stated above, don't question nature. Just enjoy it.

 

As for the house sparrows, they are an invasive species and I'd have no qualms whatsoever about kicking them out of the box physically as soon as I saw them trying to make a nest. 

They are, just say the least, strong-willed. They're very willing to kill off whatever is in the box so that they can possess it themselves....

I have:

1. Cleaned out the boxes as they start to build;

2. Sprayed a bleach solution in the box to get rid of their scent;

3. Hung reflective mylar strips over the boxes;

4. Placed blue ribbon near the boxes to attract more Bluebirds;

5. Hung mealworm feeders near the boxes.

All to no avail. I'm not a hunter and I don't like killing birds just because they are invasive. It's not their fault they they were introduced into this country. All creatures (with the exception of poisonous snake and spiders) deserve a chance to live.

For whatever reason he's back again this morning, and where I sit at my computer is at best 5' from that door.  Doesn't ever fly away while I move around the room.  I'm wondering if he's seeing his reflection on the glass, could that be the cause.    I do know bluebirds are territorial, so you can't place the boxes to close together.

Quite likely. I had one spend several hours admiring himself in the driver side rearview mirror of my truck one morning.

I do that on a pretty regular basis.

I've, been here at the computer about an hour and a half this morning, and he's been here all that time.  You can get within a couple of feet of the door before he'll fly away.
