Charging Voltage to high?

Voltage this morning was 12.60 on the battery with engine not running...

That SOUNDS normal to me, based on what your battery's been reading over the last few days, but I'm no expert.  I have a similar problem on my '88 310-8, with a battery that's just over a year old, and I'm told by others more knowledgeable that my battery may be defective.  You may want to have yours load tested -- mine passed my 100 amp load test, but failed my mechanic's 200 amp test, and NAPA's hand-held meter says it should be relaced.

... never found anything in line like a dioed ...

Were you looking down by the engine like Garry mentioned?

Does anybody have a good photo or two of that area and the diode?

Diodes are small and usually soldered inline directly into the wire coming out of the stator and then covered in a plastic sleeve (pre shrink tube). They usually look like a bump in the wire and are very easy to overlook.
