312-8 Fuel tank valve

Recommended Posts

How does the fuel valve/strainer assemble together, and into the tank?

I had to replace the fuel supply line and inline filter, while seating the line on the valve nipple it started to weep gas. It quickly stopped once the new line was seated. Is the valve supposed to swivel, or is it in fact loose from the tank? I have the exact valve as seen in the picture.

Thanks!

It's okay if it swivels.

I've never pulled one of these things apart, but I'll guess that the fuel valve is pressed into the grommet in the tank, it compresses the grommet enough to seal everything up.  It probably remains loose enough to swivel, too.

:twocents-02cents:         If the valve was weeping gas it probably should be replaced. The gas tank grommet is probably not as pliable as it was a few decades ago. I would replace it and the valve just to be on the safe side.

Yes, it is time to replace it.  There may be a screen on the petcock as well and it could be clogged.  If it has no screen, you might want to buy that type.  It would be a good time to flush the tank, often there is plenty of debris in there.

Always use the valve with the screen.  Too easy for something to get in the tank that'll clog the valve inlet if you don't have a screen.

@Craig-906 that valve replacement and grommet seating is easily helped using dielectric grease , also just a touch on the male end of the hose connection makes hose replacement easy . that grommet is easily replaced into the tank , after cleaning it out , the grease is made to assist fitting dissimilar parts , like rubber to plastic , and   fuel fitting barbs into rubber and vinyl hose . I  added a large fuel filter  in the rear under seat frame area , an another small filter closer to carb . install spring clamps on hose away from finish area . once hose is installed . lineman's  plyers , makes the finish slide easy . @lynnmor is correct  on tank clean up time , did my 3 tanks , no issues or leaks , pete

They are all over eBay and Amazon, you don't have to include Wheel Horse in your search, many tractors use the same thing.

I found this video helpful prior to attempting to replace the valve and grommet.

I always use a little oil on the stem and hole before pushing it into the grommet - makes life a lot easier getting it in and seated
